I just learned today the "rest of the story" surrounding your death (murder?). I hope you are at peace, but I fear you may not. I don't know if even you are certain what happened, but I know your shooter knows...and of course, God knows. Perhaps through God's knowledge you have found peace and through him there will be whatever reckoning is needed. I hope your family finds some earthly peace and closure someday. Anyway, thanks for all you did...

I have just read the newspaper account today of the insurance ruling. I am just sick for all your family has had to go through with everything involved in this case. How sad that the state cannot do THE RIGHT THING and take care of your family. More and more I realize things will never be right until this world ends and God deals out justice that only he can.

My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

On this your 5th year anniversary, we reflect back to how much we miss you.. John-John , you can never be replaced as a friend . My dad was a police officer , and there were many times we didn't know if we would ever get the call. I just want people to absolutely know, if you have never lived the life of a Police Officer, then you will never know how close we are as family . "The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

My mother kept the Yancey's first child Adam for the first couple years of his little life. He was John John's world. I can only imagine how he was with each child after that. He had such a great heart. It had been a few years since our families had really talked when this tragedy struck our little town. I couldn't believe it. It still makes me cry to think of it. I pray for Lori and those boys every day. God Bless you guys and may you have strength in all you do. We all love, miss, and remember John John. Anyone who ever met him could never forget him. We will see him again. In a much better place... God Bless!

I want you to please take comfort in knowing that people you do not know, people you have never met, are praying for you. We are following the very slow progress of this case and are asking God that the real truth will be found for you. I can not begin to understand what you must feel, I can only offer the reassurance that God sees and knows all, and he is the Great Judge. We will not forget John John or the person that he was. I work with several people who knew John John, and I attended the Academy with him, everyone speaks highly of your loved one. We are always here if you need us. Dear Yancey Family,

I was reading the paper last night and there was a recounting of the night of the shooting, I am so sorry for what your family is going through. I briefly saw your family at the COPS picnic but am sorry to say I did not recall the details of Sergeant Yancey's death. After reading the article I see all the unanswered questions that must compound the pain of being without your precious loved one. I pray you will get the answers you need. In the meantime, I will remember the great sacrifice made, and honor Hubert Dean Yancey's name and memory.

John-John was a great person and he will always be remembered as a loving, caring, honest man. Every time you saw him he was the same. No matter in or out of uniform he always treated you the same. He is a prime example of how an officer should be. He was truly a blessing more that he ever knew. My prayers and thoughts go out to Lori and his precious boys left behind. I was honored to have known him and he will alyways be in my heart. Our loss is heaven's gain.

Wow! its been almost 2 years now. John John was my brother-n-law and we had some great times together. He was a great man and he loved to make people laugh. He was a hero to everyone in the community and to his wife and 3 children. I was the last one in the family to talk to him because he called wanting to know were Lori was. We talked for a few min. and my sister came home and we got a phone call and found out what had happened. It was definately a tragedy. I'll never forget that night. To my sister (Lori) and my 3 nephews (Logan, Blake, and Chase) I love you all! John John, I love you and you will never be forgotten!

John John has been on my mind lately and I couldn't figure out why. Sure when another law enforcement officer is killed it affects us all, but for some reason this seemed different. Then tonight as I was on this page doing something I wanted to do for a long time, it finally hit me. For the longest time I have wanted to search the names of the members I went to the academy with back in 1998. I wanted to make sure that none of the people I had went to the academy with had died. I recently found out about this sight when our dept. had an officer killed (Matthew Rittenhouse 09/16/04). So I got the list out tonight of all the people I went to the academy with and started from the top. When I got to the bottom of the page my heart sank. So far I had not found one name on my list that matched an officer killed. Until I saw the name Hubert Dean Yancey. The news always had him as John John, sure they said Hubert but it never clicked, until tonight. John John and I were in class 838 on March 1 through April 23 at Donelson in Nashville. I didn't remember going through the class with him because we had so many officer, still I had found the reason why I could get John John out of my head. So to the members of the Scott County Sheriff's Dept, and especially John John's family please accept my heart felt condolences on my behalf and Class # 838. Rest in peace John John, we will never let you be forgotten.
