Brother Dean, Last wednesday 11/19/2003 after briefing we thought it was just another day on the beat. We left briefing and went for an early cup of coffee before the commute traffic and all the normal everyday crashes began. At coffee we talked about a lot of things but your devotion to God was something that I always admired, If I had a problem I couldn't understatnd, you always had a way making sence, and always offered a welcom solution. At about 10 AM. We met for breakfast and spent more quality time together. After breakfast we made plans to end our shift at lunch around 1PM. Dean, I was in the Office when I heard dispatch calling you but I figured you were on a stop and just wasn't listning to your radio. I then overheard buzz in the office that a motor had just gone down, I continued listening to the radio and again heard dispatch calling but you didn't respond. Suddenly, the butterfies in my stomach hit and I got on my bike and responded to the scene not sure of what I was responding to and what I was about to encounter. Upon my arrival, I encountered my worst nightmare, the look on chucks face was all I needed to see to know that things were not good. The pain that followed as I watched paramedics performing CPR to you was almost unbearable. I went to the hospital behind the ambulance and shortly after arrival I was told that you did not survive the collison. Dean, I held your hand for some time after that hoping that you would jump up and laugh and tell me it was a big joke, but reality hit and now your gone forever. I never got to have that lunch so you owe me when I get there. Brother Dean, I miss you more than anything but what will be hard to get over is the long lonly ride home from now on. You will be in my heart forever. LUV-YA Brother, Fergie.

When God made Police Officers..........
When the Lord was creating police officers, he was into his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said, "You're doing a lot of fiddling on this one."
And the Lord said, "Have you read the spec on this order?"
"A police officer has to be able to run five miles through alleys in the dark, scale walls, enter homes the health inspector wouldn't touch, and not wrinkle is uniform."
"He has to be able to sit in an undercover car all day on a stakeout, cover a homicide scene that night, canvass the neighborhood for witness, and testify in court the next day."
"He has to be in top physical condition at all times, running on black coffee and half-eaten meals. And he has to have six pairs of hands."
The angel shook her head slowly and said, "Six pairs of hands...no way."
"It's not the hands that are causing me problems," said the Lord, "it's the three pairs of eyes an officer has to have."
"That's on the standard model?" asked the angel.
The Lord nodded. One pair that sees through a bulge in a pocket before he asks, "May I see what's in there, sir?" (When he already knows and wishes he'd taken that accounting job.) Another pair in the side of his head for his partners' safety. And another pair of eyes here in front that can look reassuringly at a bleeding victim and say, "You'll be all right ma'am, when he knows it isn't so."
"Lord," said the angel, touching his sleeve, "rest and work on this tomorrow."
"I can't" said the Lord, "I already have a model that can talk a 250 pound drunk into a patrol car without incident and feed a family of five on a civil service paycheck."
The angel circled the model of the police officer very slowly, "Can it think?" she asked.
"You bet," said the Lord. "It can tell you the elements of a hundred crimes; recite Miranda warnings in it's sleep; detain, investigate, search, and arrest a gang member on the street in less time it takes five learned judges to debate the legality of the stop...and still keeps its sense of humor."
"This officer also has phenomenal personal control. He can deal with crime scenes painted in hell, coax a confession from a child abuser, comfort a murder victim's family, and then read in the daily paper how law enforcement isn't sensative to the rights of criminal suspects."
Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the police officer. "There's a leak," she pronounced. "I told you that you were trying to put too much into this model."
"That's not a leak," said the Lord, "it's a tear."
"What's the tear for?" asked the angel.
"It's for bottled-up emotions, for fallen comrades, for commitment to that piece of cloth called the American flag, for justice."
"You're a genius," said the angel.
The Lord looked somber and said "I didn't put it there"

Brother Dean, you always tried to get to the t/c's before me and when I got there first you would always asked me for the paper work. My reply to you was, unless you want to roll around on the ground and get dirt you can't have it. You would always laugh and tell me okay, okay if you want it that bad you can have it but I'll get the next one.
Your sacrifice is our loss. You will not be forgotten and don't worry about Fergie, I'll go to PTI with him, PROMISE.....
Dean, 87-M2 your 10-10 now, so we will take it from here. God Bless You and your family.

The Final Inspection
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

I've worked with Dean since he transferred back to San Diego in the late 90's. I first met him before he transferred back, at a collision scene on SR-52 near Mission Gorge. I remember him getting off his m/c and coming over to me and offering to handle the paperwork for the accident. We also talked about the goings on at San Diego vs El Cajon and the reasons why he was considering coming back to SD. My first impression of Dean was of someone who cared and desired to serve or assist, even if it wasn't his call or in his area. Years later when he broke his leg he was confined to special duty where I now work reviewing collision reports. Once again he offered his services to help out with review, which can be tedious in itself. We discovered that we each shared a common faith. I know and am sure that Dean not only believed in God but trusted in Jesus Christ for his salvation. Dean's faith and great sense of humor are what I will treasure until we meet again.

Dean,
I really got to know you when you were one of the "Walking Wounded" and assigned to Special Duty reviewing accident reports. You were funny, always kept a positive attitude about life, and was hating every minute that you were away from riding your motor. I even asked you once if you were infected by the "Special Duty" fever and consider getting off the bike to enjoy the indoors, to which you replied with a resounding "NO WAY!" Your dedication to your family, job, and community is an inspiration to me and I am sure a lot of other officers in this department. You will be terribly missed. My family and I would like to extend our sincere and deepest condolence to the family of Dean. God Bless and Rest In Peace Brother. You will never be forgotten.
