Reflections for Police Officer Daniel Matthew Starks

Dan left this world doing one of the things he loved most, being a police officer. Now he is doing the thing he loved most in heaven with Jesus Christ! Dan you will always be our Guardian Angel - watching over and protecting us.
To your family and friends I can only say thank-you. Thank you for giving us such a wonderful human being, and for your faith and strength that has helped so many of us during this time of grief. Dan will never be forgotten and will always be in our hearts. Our fallen brother #311 will always be a part of the FMPD family.
"Ft. Myers to D32 #311 you are clear to 10-7"

Tragedies like this remind us of how fragile life really is and how things can change in an instant. We in dispatch tend to feel a little motherly to those on the road, especially the young ones. So you can imagine how hard we all have taken this.

Dan, you will always be remembered. I know that you are watching over us like we watched over you and your brothers and sisters. You will be missed and never forgotten - you had such an impact on all of us, particularily those on your shift.

Until we meet again,

Cindra Dunaway - Dispatcher

When I looked at the ODMP page and saw Florida, my heart skipped a beat, having friends in law enforcement all over the state. What a sad occasion for Ft. Meyers PD and the sunshine state. Having lost a fellow Deputy here in Kentucky I know the pain and shock your community is feeling. It will be two years the 13th of this month and it still hurts. My prayers to Daniels fiancee, family, friends and co-workers. He was truly a gifted young man and now he joins an elite group of God's chosen few. God Bless you Officer Starks, enjoy your Heavenly assignment!

Dan accomplished some many things in a small amount of time. Being an officer was his biggest and brightest dream.

You are always a part of our shift and will always be remembered. You have the strength of a lion in your heart and now we carry a part of you with us each day.

Watch over us as we 10-8 and we will meet again when we all 10-7.

Be safe

Rest In Peace young brother in blue. May God comfort your family and co-workers during this trying time.

The policeman stood to face his God, which must always come to pass.

He hoped his boots were shining, just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, Policeman. How shall I deal with you?

Have you always turned the other cheek? To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulder's and said. "No Lord, I guess I ain't,

Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a Saint."

I've had to work most Sundays, and at times my talk was rough,

and sometimes I've been violent, because the streets are awfully tough.

"But I never took a penny that wasn't mine to keep...

Though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills got too steep.."

And I never passed a cry for help, Though at times I shook with fear.

And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place among the people here.

They never wanted me around except to calm their fear."

"If you've got a place for me here Lord, It needn't be so grand.

I never expected or had too much, but if you don't...I'll understand."

There was silence all around the throne where the saints often trod.

As the policeman waited quietly, for the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, Policeman. You've borne your burdens well.

Come walk a beat in Heaven's streets, you've done your time in Hell."

DAN, I CAN STILL REMEMBER THE DAY YOU FIRST CAME TO FMPD AS AN EXPLORER, AND THEN EVENTUALLY BECAME A CSA FOR THE DEPARTMENT. IT WAS BETWEEN THOSE TIMES YOU WOULD RIDE ON DUTY WITH ME, ALWAYS EAGER TO LEARN AND WANTING TO HELP. YOU WOULD SHOW UP ON SOME OF MY CALLS AS A CSA AND WAS ALWAYS BE THERE TO LEND A HAND. I ALWAYS KNEW THE DEPARTMENT WOULD ADVANCE YOU ON TO BECOME A POLICE OFFICER, AND YOU EXCELLED AT ALL OF CHALLENGES THE DEPARTMENT PLACED IN FRONT OF YOU. I MET UP WITH YOUR MOM ON A CALL RIGHT BEFORE YOU GRADUATED THE ACADEMY AND SHE WAS SO PROUD OF YOU AND WHAT YOU HAD ACCOMPLISHED. I THEN WOULD EVENTUALLY HAVE YOU ON A CALL WITH ME AS A BACKUP OFFICER ASSISTING ME WITH A MENTALLY DISTURBED PERSON. I OBSERVED HOW YOU CARRIED YOURSELF ON THIS CALL PROFESSIONAL, CARING, LISTENING TO THIS INDIVIDUAL AND EVENTUALLY HELPING ME BRING THE INCIDENT TO A PEACEFUL RESOLUTION.....DAN I WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR THE TIMES WE SHARED TOGETHER, FOR ALWAYS BEING THERE AND BEING YOU. YOU WERE AN HONEST, SINCERE, DOWN TO EARTH PERSON, FILLED WITH INTEGRITY FROM HEAD TO TOE. THOSE WHO HAD THE PRIVLEDGE OF KNOWING YOU WILL NEVER FORGET YOU... GOODBYE MY FRIEND YOU ARE GREATLY MISSED!!!!!

My Darling Daniel - You will forever be missed, and the FMPD, your family, and friends will forever miss your wonderful smile and kinds words. I myself, have been blown away by being able to meet such wonderful people whose lives you have touched in ways that are remarkable. You, along with God are giving me, and your family the strength to get through this difficult time, and for that I am thankful. I am grateful to you for protecting our city & doing what you always wanted to do - be a police officer & help those in need. I will always miss you but will one day meet you in Heaven. Until then, Please watch over all of us down here on this Earth & be proud of your department and what they will accomplish here on Earth.

Many of us need many, many years on Earth to get our lives right. Daniel only needed 21 years. That is amazing. Bless you Daniel! I Love You!
