On behalf of the all the families that MICOPS represents in the state of Michigan, our thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Sherwoods family and department. To Kevin's fellow Brothers in Blue who still continue to wear a badge and serve us all. We should all sleep safe at night knowing these dedicated men and women watch over us. And like Kevin, I know anyone of you would put yourself in harms way for someone you don't even know. I know Kevin is watching over you and will be riding in the seat next to you as you continue to do your duty. God Bless You!!!

Kevin, we will never forget you. Your loving brother!

Deputy Sherwood was a excellent professional police officer that gave his life for what he loved to do. I have worked with Deputy Sherwood for his 9 years at Clare County and saw him grow into being a very proud and professional police officer. This department has lost a outstanding police officer that will greatly be missed.
Mrs Sherwood & your three lovely daughters, Remember the wonderful times you had together with Kevin and grow from that.
May you rest in peace brother, and God Bless You.

I WILL NEVER FORGET THE CALL I RECIEVED ON OCTOBER 9 2003 IN THE EARLY MORNING HOURS OF KEVIN'S UNTIMELY AND UNFAIR PASSING. I WAS SICK TO MY STOMACH UPON HEARING OF THE LOSS OF A GOOD FRIEND. MY FIRST THOUGHTS WERE OF KEVIN'S FAMILY AND WHAT A DEVISTATING BLOW THIS WOULD BE. I FEEL PRIVLEDGED TO HAVE KNOWN THIS FINE AMERICAN.

I AM CERTAIN HE IS NOW PATROLLING THE STREETS OF HEAVEN.

SAY A PRAYER FOR HIS FAMILY.

Kevin was a close friend to myself and many other officers. Kevin will be missed by many. Kevin was a leader and taught many officers the right way to do the job. What makes it hard is why God called on Kevin so early. I am very proud to have worked with Kevin for 9 years.

YOU CAN IMAGINE THE SHOCK AND DISBELIEF OF HEARING THE NEWS JUST AFTER COMING OFF A MIDNIGHT SHIFT HERE IN THE LAS VEGAS VALLEY. I WAS STANDING THERE IN MY KITCHEN LISTENING TO THE MESSAGE ON MY ANSWERING MACHINE AND FEELING SICK TO MY STOMACH UPON HEARING OF THE UNTIMELY AND UNFAIR DEATH OF A GOOD FRIEND.

MY FIRST THOUGHTS WERE OF KEVIN'S FAMILY AND YOUNG CHILDREN AS WELL AS HIS CO-WORKERS. I CANNOT IMAGINE HOW HARD THIS IS GOING TO AFFECT THIS COMMUNITY AND DEPARTMENT.

KEVIN WAS THE KIND OF PERSON THAT YOU WERE ALWAYS HAPPY TO SEE NO MATTER WHAT THE CIRCUMSTANCE. IT MAKES ME WONDER WHY HE HAD TO GO. KEVIN CHOSE THIS LINE OF WORK AND THANK GOD FOR THOSE WHO CHOOSE TO PUT THEMSELVES IN HARM'S WAY FOR THE SAKE OF OTHERS. NEVER FORGET THAT HE GAVE HIS LIFE TO PROTECT THE CITIZENS OF THIS COMMUNITY. SAY A PRAYER FOR HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

Kevin was a great coworker. He always asked how my day was going, and had a kind word. When I first started working in the office on nights, he would stop in and spend a few moments to keep me company. I will never forget him for making me feel welcome. His smile and kind words will be missed.

My family also went through a tradegy many years ago, although it did not end in death, it did end with me being permanently disabled. The following poem was in a book that was given to them by a local poet, Bill Carr, to help them through some of the hard times:

Hand-in-Hand

There's never a trail that has no end,
There's never a road without a bend,
But the time has come to say good-bye,
With memories sweet, and tearful eye.
Take care in everything you do,
May a loving God watch over you,
So smile - and smell the goldenrod,
Walk softly - Hand-in-Hand with God.

To Katie, and the family of Kevin, although he is not with you on earth, he is surely looking down on you from Heaven, and that is certainly a wonderful blessing.

Kevin,
When the angel from heaven came and took you away that early morning, he took away a part of me that can never be replaced. Badge 1046 will be forever retired and placed on the walls in heaven for all the brothers and sisters of law enforcement to see shining down on them.
When I need to see you I will look at your daughters and see their father looking back at me and know that you will always be with us through them.

I will always miss you, BUT NEVER FORGET YOU and what you stood for.

Your friend, Your Brother
John

Kevin,

Words can not say what you meant to your friends and I. You were a pillar and rock which we could look to. I will miss you and the great times we had. I am glad I had the privlage of calling you friend, confidant, and colleague. The last four years you have taught me more about life and police work than I can imagine. You were always there when I had a question. When you were unsure of the answer you would be there and look it up with me. Work will never be the same without you, but we are all better people for having known you.

I will never forget October 9th, 2003.

Kevin;

You are the most respectful, courteous, gentleman that I had the pleasure to work with. The first day you came to work at Clare County you became one of "My Boys".
Even though I was the Sergeant, I found myself working hard to impress you so that you would carry on an efficient work ethic. You never let me down and you never let the citizens of Clare County down. You will forever be one of my heros.
You, Katie and the girls are in my prayers daily and always will be.
