Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Andrew John Mazur
I was on duty when we heard of Drew's death. My guys and I just looked at one another knowing what the other was thinking. Once the initial shock and sadness was over with. We started planning how we could help. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and his brothers and sisters at the G.C.S.O. A beautiful young man died for his community and country on Sunday. He died protecting all of us.

Drew where do I begin. In a department the size of ours it is hard to get to know everyone, but everyone knew "Mazur" always 10-8 and in to everything. I remember getting the call from dispatch on 8-17-03 at 1735 hrs. I was scheduled to work that evening and rushed to get in to work. When they told me it was you I could not believe it. As Russell said there had to have been 80 deputies out there looking for the guy. Justice was served 14 hours later. My thoughts and prayers go out to Drew's family. All of you know this but Drew was a 10-8 deputy and an even more 10-8 friend. He will be greatly missed by this office. God speed Drew

THE POLICEMAN’S LAST ROLL CALL ...
THE POLICEMAN STOOD AND FACED HIS GOD, WHICH MUST ALWAYS COME TO PASS. HE HOPED HIS SHOES WERE SHINING, JUST AS BRIGHTLY AS HIS BRASS. "STEP FORWARD NOW, POLICEMAN. HOW SHALL I DEAL WITH YOU? HAVE YOU ALWAYS TURNED THE OTHER CHEEK? TO MY CHURCH HAVE YOU BEEN TRUE?"
THE POLICEMAN SQUARED his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain’t. Because those of us who carry badges can’t always be a Saint. I’ve had to work most Sundays, and at times my talk was rough, and sometimes I’ve been violent because the streets are awfully tough. But I never took a penny that wasn’t mine to keep, though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills just got to steep. And I never passed a cry for help, though times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I’ve wept many unmanly tears. I know I don’t deserve a place among the people here, they never wanted me around except to calm their fear. If you’ve a place for me Lord, it needn’t be so grand. I never expected or had too much, but if you don’t, I’ll understand."
There was silence all around the throne where the Saints had often trod. As the policeman waited quietly, for the judgement of his God. "Step forward now, policeman, you’ve borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat on Heaven’s streets, you’ve done your time in hell."

Seeing Deputy Mazur's picture in coatee, I checked the Citadel website and found that he is a member of the Class of 2001.
I am an officer in Richmond, Virginia and a graduate of VMI. While we may be rivals on the gridiron (and the court, and the track, etc.), Citadel and VMI grads share a unique bond. I have bought beers for Citadel grads as often as they have for me.
My condolences to the family, friends, and Citadel classmates of Deputy Mazur.
You wore The Ring, Deputy Mazur, and will live forever in the hearts of your classmates and the hallowed halls of "El Cid".

To the wife of Deputy Sheriff Andrew Mazur--your husband did what he loved, rest assured he is now in a happier place. He will serve as a reminder to us all of the sacrifices that law enforcement officials make everyday. May you rest in peace my brother, we will see you later.

My prayers are with the family, friends, and co-workers of Deputy Mazur. I know what you are going through from personal experience, things that no one else can truely understand and words could never express. There really is no rational explaination for your loss, only questions that remain unanswered and a hole in your heart that will never be filled. I wish I had some deep and meaningful words to comfort and guide you, but the truth is that all I can do is pray that God will keep His loving and mighty arms around you. Your pain will never "go away" but you do, evenually, learn to live with it. You are in my thoughts daily - my extended family.

Another young life taken from this world by someone who didn't care about anything or any body but himself. Officer Mazur became a cop at 22 because he wanted to do the right thing for this society, but some members of society try to break all the rules and when they're caught, they turn on us and take out lives to get away.
Every time I hear about an Officer losing his life in the line of duty I get a sick feeling in my stomach and all I can do is try to imagine the hurt and sadness the families have to go through. God bless you brother.

In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
The sting of death is sin: and the strength of sin is the law.
But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
I Corinthians 15:55-58
To the family and friends of Officer Mazur, may the Lord watch over each of you during your time of bereavement. Take strength in knowing that the Lord is still in control. My prayers and thoughts are with you.
To the Brothers in Blue of Officer Mazur, know that your work is not in vain. You are very appreciated for all that you do to keep the people in our communities safe and protected. Even though you may not hear it on a daily basis, which you should, we thank you. May God Bless You and Keep You during your time of bereavement. You all have done and continue to do a job well done.
