Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Andrew John Mazur

I never had the blessing of knowing Drew in this life on Earth, but after meeting his wife and other family members, I know that meeting him would have been an improvement upon my own life. Drew and his wife's testimony about their love and devotion to Christ was such an encouragement and a comfort . . . it was as if they were there to help me through the process, rather than I, for them. We will never forget Drew and the sacrifice he made for our society, and his wife for giving those of us in law enforcement a great comfort in the time of grief over the loss of our brother. May God bless her and the family, and may we look forward to that glorious day of seeing Drew again after our days on Earth our o'er.

I remember that gloomy Sunday afternoon when my father left our driveway signal one. It was a very sad day for us when we got word that Drew was killed, but justice was served the next morning. This is the first deputy that I have known that has been killed so I really don't know what to say, but I do want to tell Drew's family that I am sorry for your loss and the Drew will forever be honored and remembered by the Greenville County Sheriff's Office and everyones lives that knew Drew for the great person that he was.

Drew, you are and will be missed. On August ,17 2001 we officially joined among the ranks of our brothers in blue to help make this world a better place ,but even before then during the 9 weeks that 416 grew as a class I had great respect for you. I have met very few men that have had the faith and dedication that you possess. To the family and friends of Drew my heart goes out to you because I only knew Drew for a short time and I can only imagine the pain it must have caused for someone who knew him a lifetime. August ,17 2003 was a difficult day for me to handle for two reasons, one in my opinion we lost one of the best men I have ever had the pleasure to meet and know, secondly 2 years to the day that class 416 graduated the one statement made by our instructors that I hoped would not come true did. Drew I say again you will be loved and missed and I can only hope to be half the man you are .

To Drews Family ,God Bless ,And You Will Always Be In MY Prayers....SCCJA Class 416 Will Never Forget

"Give me a boy, Oh God, who is wiling to learn the true value of honor, the necessity of perseverence and loyalty, and the meaningfulness of devotion to God and country. And I shall take this boy as does a blacksmith take a crude piece of metal, and place him over a forge whose liberating flame of education is fired by the bellows of strict military discipline. Into this ingot of a man I shall temper self-respect and self-discipline, fear of God and respect for mankind, appreciation of freedom and awareness of what sacrifices must be made to preserve freedom, and above all an insatiable desire for truth and honesty. And when all these things I have done, I shall brand my finished work with a ring of gold to let all of humanity know that I have given back to the world

Almighty god, the source of light and strength. we implore Thy blessing on thisour beloved institution, that it may contine to its high purposes.

Guide and strenghthen those upon whom rests the authority of government; enlighten with wisdom those who teach and those who learn; and grant to all of usthat through sound learning and firm leadership, we may prove ourselves worthy citizens of our country, devoted to truth, given to unselfish service, loyal to every obligation of life and above all to Thee.

Preserve us faithfull to the ideals of The Citadel, sincere in fellowship, unswerving in duty, finding joy in purity, and confidence through a steadfast faith.

Grant to each one of us in his or her own life, a humble heart, a steadfast purpose, and a joyful hope, with a readiness to endure hardship and suffer if need be, that truth may prevail among us and that Thy will may be done on earth. through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

Sir, You have lived the prayer to the fullest. For that we commend you, love you, and will miss you greatly.

"If you are able, save for them a place inside of you and save a backward glance when you are leaving for the places they can no longer go.
Be not ashamed to say that you loved them, though you may or may not have always,
take what they have taught you in their dying and keep it with your own. "

To Andrew's wife, Bryce,
I was in class 416 w/ Drew at the academy. When my husband told me that Drew had lost his life it broke my heart. Drew was an awesome guy that loved the Lord. He was such an inspiration to me while at the academy. I was so thankful to have a fellow Christian in our class. My husband was also in class 416, in fact, Darren spoke w/ Drew several times about asking me out. We were married this past March. I can not even imagine all the things that you are facing now. I can tell you that you have been a blessing to me. I have kept up w/ the articles and interviews and was amazed at the grace and the strength God has given you. Bryce, I have never met you, but know that as a sister in Christ you are being prayed for daily!

Just looking at your picture brings tears to my eyes, so young and gung-ho. What a tragedy. There are no words to ease the pain of family and friends, just know there are so many people praying for you and your family. I read these reflections daily since 11-13-01 and it never gets easier or makes any sense. I guess evil is like that, selfish and self-serving. Deputy Andrew Mazur thank you for putting yourself in harms way to protect those you didn't even know. There is no doubt in my mind he would have harmed someone innocent. To his wife, you will be reunited someday and it will ease the pain you feel today, I am so sorry.

WHERE TO BEGIN... WARRIOR, THAT IS THE BEST WAY TO DESCRIBE YOU. I CAN LEAVE NO WORDS ACCEPT THE ONES I KNOW TO BE TRUE:
"BEING A WARRIOR AND A LEADER IS NOT ABOUT ACHEIEVING PERSONAL SUCCESS. SUCCESS USUSALLY DOES COME TO LEADERS, BUT TO REAL LEADERS, PERSONAL SUCCESS IS JUST A SECONDARY GAIN - A NICE PAYOFF, BUT NOT THE REAL PRIZE. THE REAL PRIZE IS ACHEIVING THE VICTORY OF A GREAT PRINCIPLE - LIKE FREEDOM, OR PEACE, OR THE PROSPERITY OF THE MANY. THEREFORE, A REAL LEADER IS ACTUALLY A SERVANT. HE'S THE SERVANT OF A GREATER CAUSE. IT'S TRUE: LIFE IS WAR. BUT IF A LEADER IS SERVING A GREAT CAUSE, HE CAN ACHEIVE POWER. AND GLORY. AND FULFILLMENT. AND PEACE."
MARCINKO
YOU ARE A TRUE DELTA-DOG, A WARRIOR, A ROAD WARRIOR, AND YOU GAVE THE ULTIMATE. YOU WOULD HAVE HAD IT NO OTHER WAY.

"A FINAL 10-42"

Why did you leave so soon?
I had just talk to you earlier this afternoon.
We were laughing and carrying on had I only known.
Had I known how the afternoon was going to end all wrong.

It hasnt ben the same since you've been gone.
I heard the call and I was on the way ,
I'll never forget finding you that day.
It ripped my heart to you injured like that.
I did for you what you could not do filling your lungs with each breath,
while others did the rest.
I stayed with you till you were flown from the scene
hoping to wake and find it all to be a dream.
It was extremely ahrd to face the fact,
you were gone and never coming back.
You were a great cop and a good friend,
but why did it all have to suddenly end.

So tragically taken from this world
your friends, family and wife.
You paid the ultimate price and they
all represent the supreme sacrifice.

You served mankind well and did a thankless
job that few would choose to do.
Knowing what the consequences could bring,
you accepted your life for our preservation.

You were laid to rest with Honors in such a glorious
way we will never forget.
Bugels playing, drums tapping and bagpipes pipingas the
twenty-one gun salute echoed in the air while we stood at attention.

Now i wake to another dawn
wondering why it had to go wrong.
Thoughts of you will alwyas remain,
but things are not the same-----
