My heart goes out to Officer Wendel's family and the rest of the Richmond Police Department. I am the wife of a Richmond police officer and I worry everytime he leaves for work. Although, I know he (and all law enforcement) is protecting others and trying to make the streets and community a better place, I also know how dangerous his job is and all we can do is hope that he (they) will be safe and come home to us at the end of the day. God bless you all. You all are heros. Be carefull and find the guy who did this soon.

May God bless the Richmond Police Department and the family of Officer Wendel.
THE ROOM WHERE ANGELS SLEEP
Let me in Lord, for I am weary
Show me the room where Angels sleep.
Make those to know that I left below
I am resting - they have no cause to weep.
Free from the pain my body knew, and
unknown fears that filled my nights,
Far and free as the eagle on high,
my soul flies to lofty heights.
Tell them to have happy memories Lord,
and smile when they think of me.
Keep them from being sad and lonely;
just tell them at last I am free
So let me in Lord, with those I love
who are forever in your keep,
and I'll cross the river, climb the long
stairway - to the room where Angles sleep.

My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Fallen Officer Douglas Wendel. This tragic incident exemplifies the cowardice of those without humanity. Those who are too timid to challenge their adversaries face to face.
My sympathies to the men and women of the Richmond Police Department. His sacrifice will not be forgotten.

Hello darkness, my old friend,
I've come to talk with you again,
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone,
'Neath the halo of a street lamp,
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of
a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence.
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening,
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one deared
Disturb the sound of silence.
"Fools" said I,"You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you,
Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell,
And echoed
In the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning,
In the words that it was forming.
And the signs said, The words of the prophets
are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls.
And whisper'd in the sounds of silence.
Sleep well, we buried a friend today.

I am SO sad to read of the loss of a hero. To his family, friends, and co-workers, you are in my prayers. Especially to his fiancee, I know your pain, I lost my fiancee in 2001. I know how hard it is to think of all the future plans you dreamed would come true, I wish I could ease your pain. Hold your memories tight in your heart, that way he will always be with you (I still miss and think of Steve daily). Our finacees are watching over us and they always will. To his children, your dad IS and will ALWAYS be a hero. He is still watching over you, he is with you! No words can take the pain away, but I hope it helps to know that you are all in my prayers. Lean on God and eachother!! Officer Wendel, tell Steve I said Hi, I miss him.
I wish peace to all those who miss him!!

My heart goes out to the family and friends of officer Wendel. We did not personally know Doug but he was a protector of families in the Richmond area. What a senseless act that took the life of a fine officer. May God protect and hold you in His arms and offer comfort to you and remember that he will always be your "Guardian Angel".
GOD SPEED Officer Wendel.

May God carry all of you men and women of Richmonds Police Department until you are able to walk beside him once again.
May Doug Wendels family and friends find comfort in each other and know we are hurting and wondering why so many senseless acts are carried out on these men and women who try to protect us all. He did his all in trying to help a city and the people in it. Peace and Love to his Family and Friends and to his fellow brothers and sisters he worked with. May God be with you and me for he went to a better place. A Citizen of Hanover County.
God Bless you, brother. You gave all you had to give. You have completed your tour with HONOR. Thank you. Rest easy knowing that God and your friends and comrades will watch over and protect your family.
To the children... Be proud. Your father is a TRUE HERO. He will not be forgotten. Our prayers are with you.

I am so sorry for the loss of this officer. Reading all the reflections he sounds like another wonderful man who gave his life to protect others. To his family, hold each other tight and remember all his smiles. The pain is great now, but time will ease it and those wonderful memories will fill you with peace. How lucky everyone was to have him in their life and now looking down on you from heaven. His family will always have an angel smiling down on them.

My prayers are with the family, friends and brothers and sisters of our nation's police departments. God has a plan for Officer Wendel and he will go on to be a guardian angel for many. I find peace in knowing that Officer Wendel, like so many other officers, was out on the streets of our city, making a difference and trying to make it a safer place to live. Rest in peace, Officer Wendel, you will be missed greatly...

God and officer we adore,
In time of danger not before;
Danger gone, all things righted,
God forgotten, officer slighted.
We won't forget.
