My thoughts are prayers are with the children, family, colleagues and friends of Officer Wendel. It is so tragic for this man to have lost his life while protecting the citizens of the city of Richmond. I will remain confident that this murderer will be caught and suffer the consequences of this cowardly act. I am hopeful that Officer Wendel's colleagues and friends will help the mother of his children keep alive their father's memory and freely offer the support and guidance this family will need. My heart aches for the loss Officer Wendel's children will have to face every day for the rest of their lives. May God bring peace and acceptance to all who have been affected by this tragedy.

My heart goes out to your family and friends of RPD. I was once a Richmond Deputy and used to love hearing the stories of the crazy Southside. I started in 1994 when Richmond was the worst of the worst yet RPD continued to keep the streets safe. Doug.... you have done your time in hell.... we will take over and continue on in your memory.... RIP

What a shock to everyone this was. Doug was a great father and a good friend. We will all miss him. He will live on in our hearts and minds forever. He loved his kids more than anything and that loved was shown and heard everytime he spoke of them. The world has truly lost a great officer, his kids have lost a great father, and we all have lost a great friend.

It seems like only yesterday we were all in that God forsaken back room at the Academy..... THE 79th Recruit Class (get in the gym). I will never forget all the times hearing Wendel's (aka Swendel) N.Y. accent from the back of the room.... and all of use craming into his big brow van to go get lunch.... and hearing Doug yell out "Bolgah, harry up...weez leavin'!"........... I cannot believe he's gone now.... we are all gonna miss you you crazy New Yokah!!!! You did your job brother, you did it well.. all the way until the end! You will never be forgotten....and I don't think any of us will ever quite find a way to fill that hole left in our heart now that you have been taken. -Max

So many of our fine men and women are losing their lives through the acts of people without regard to human life and this officer tried so hard to give back to the people of Richmond. May he remain in our hearts and prayers for the tremendrous job he and others like him are doing.
God Bless him and the family he leaves behind.

We work beside each other each day not knowing what challenges it will bring to us. You ran the race, you fought the fight. God be with your family that includes the Richmond Police Department as you weather this storm.

I did not know you but I felt your presence.
Your sacrifice will not be forgotten.
We do not know the reason that God chose to call you home.
Thank you Officer Wendel, you made our streets safer to roam.
And when my child is out playing; I'll always think of you.
Of your courage and those who worked beside you;
Protecting those of us you never knew.
Rest now my brave soldier.
Take your place in the heavens above.
Rest in peace Officer Wendel.
God has called you home to Love.
I pray that God will Bless the family and keep them strong during this difficult time.

Doug,
I worked the streets of Southside just prior to you graduating from the Police Academy, and though, I did not know you, you are a brother in blue. Your presence on the streets of Southside will be greatly missed! For my friends who still work south of the James, please find these animals, and bring them to the justice they so justly deserve. If anyone can find them, it is You!
Doug, your duty now is to watch over the officers left behind, and I know you will do so with the vim and vinegar you had on the streets.
Peace my brother, and my prayers and thoughts are with you and your family at this time.
Doug you may have marked 10-7 E.O.T. on earth, but now we know there is another Blue Angel marking 10-8 in Heaven! Give my best to Mongo, our second recent Blue Angel.
Peace my brother...a job well done!

We had just returned to the Academy from a day of training, when we were told the news about Officer Wendel. Our hearts sank in our chests. We are a week away from earning our badge and entering the streets of Richmond as Police Officers. All we can think is that we want to be out there NOW, helping to bring justice for him and his family.
We will begin our Tour of Duty in honor of you, Officer Wendel, with hopes of becoming as great an officer as you are. Please watch over us as we make our way and rest in peace...we have the watch now too.
