My heart and prayers are with the Wendel family today and always. As the children of this hero are either heading to COPS kids camp or Outward bound today, may you know that your hero is with you always. We will never forget the sacrifice that you and your entire family made for all of us. Continue to rest in peace Officer Wendel...

I was working at the Richmond Police Credit Union the day Doug was shot and killed. I remember hearing the sirens blasting as all of the detectives sped out of the parking garage..I had no idea what happened. Doug came into the credit union alot and was very personable. I also remember the man hunt that went on until he was caught. One special officer who I have known for years was there when they caught him and he said it was the best and worst day of his life. RIP Doug

I took my Daughter Dana into the city today because she had to take some pictures for her photography class she is taking. The little ones were also in the car with us so on the way home driving down Midlothian Turnpike I asked my kids if they wanted to see where a hero died and they said yes so we headed over to 33rd Street. As we eased the car over to the curb we could see the Thin Blue Line on the sidewalk, we all got out and just stood there silent for a minute and Dana asked if she could photograph it for school, I told her go right ahead that you would like that. We stayed for a few more minutes and said our goodbyes and went home. You are not forgotten Doug......Hero's live FOREVER.

Officer Wendel, as your wife and kids are at kids camp, they are in my prayers today as they face another EOW without you. I know that they are getting lots of love and support at camp. My prayers are also with you mom as I know how much her heart is hurting, time does not heal the pain in our hearts. May you continue to rest in peace Officer Wendel, and you sir will never be forgotten.

Almost 8 years, Doug, and you remain close in many hearts. Thank you for watching over her - I love her as much as you do, & I'm proud of her accomplishments, but know they would have been sweeter if you were present in person. Rest well, Dear, and know I'll continue to be there for her whenever possible. God Bless.

It's the strangest thing. I have no idea in this world why Officer Wendel was on my mind today but I know that he was. So was his fiancee. I have read each and every entry in this remembrance tribute to Officer Wendel. Each entry has touched my heart and I feel as though I have been reading some of the most private messages. I have had to fight back my tears. My heart has ached for Officer Wendel's mother. I hope so much that God will give you the peace that you long for. Your grief has truly touched my heart and I will call your name in prayer. I would like for all of Officer Wendel's loved ones to know that in reading your messages you have painted a picture of a fine man. A loving father, brother and son. I would especially like to reach out to Officer Wendel's fiancee. I remember reading a newspaper article about you several years ago and my heart ached for you. Please know that you are thought of; even today by someone that has never met you....but I do remember your story. I pray God's blessings on each and everyone of you.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 7th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
I hold your family in my heart's embrace today and pray for their solace for I know both the pain and pride are forever, especially your mother who misses you so much. Until I read your memorial today, I did not realize that you died in the same hospital my oldest son James was born at in July of 1968. I am so sorry that your life could not be saved.
Rest In Peace
