Today I exited from I-95 to State Road 100. Now that the construction is completed, they have a beautiful sign dedicating the interchange to your memory. I patrol your interchange proudly, knowing the sacrifice you made to your county. It has been 5 years since the tragic day, but it has not forgotten. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family, friends, and FCSO during the anniversary of your passing.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Chuck, we met but briefly one Saturday as I was watching my son play soccer. You had not even started with Flagler yet but I could see the enthusiasm in your eyes and hear it in your voice when you told me that you were starting next week. In those couple of minutes, I came to like you. I would see your smiling face around the halls of operations in the weeks following your start date and it is that smiling face that I miss the most! I will see you in heaven and don't worry, we have the watch here on earth now, you watch out for us in heaven. God bless!

Chuck,
I did not have the honor of meeting you but have been lucky enough to recently become part of the WPD. In my two years hear I have met, and been able to work alongside many of your good friends. All have spoken very highly of you. Not only have they all been great to me by teaching and advising, but they were also kind enough to invite me to the ramp garage to take a moment to celebrate your life and work. I'm a firm believer that those who pass are able to look down on others-as you saw that night your friends still miss you and think of you often.
Tonight I was sitting around waiting to go in for C platoon on a swap when for some reason I thought of this site. I logged on and started to read about WPD officers. I read all of the reflections on your page and have learned that you had a tremendous sense of humor and were a dedicated cop.
Chuck-your name and memory will live on in the WPD. My God bless you and your family.

When a fellow officer is taken from us under any circumstances it leaves a large hole that can never be filled. I still remember the very first day I met Chuck. He had just finished his FTO training and I was assigned to work a 2 man car with him in the North-End. Chuck literally jumped into the car and shouted "Let's Go!!". At this point I cursed every supervisor that I could think of for making me work with a Rookie. I immediately gave him "The Speech" and told him not to touch or do anything. I had not even backed out of the garage before Chuck had turned on the siren. I asked him why he did that and he said "Because you told me not to." By the end of the shift he had me as pumped up about the job as he was. Chuck and I would go on to work many areas toghether over the next 5 years and every shift was an experience. I still cannot think about Chuck without laughing with a tear in my eye. Chuck, remeber the ZEN, my brother. Its not the same without you.

The Norcross High School class of 1986 20th Anniversary contact information was posted today - that was when I knew that Chuck passed. Though I haven't seen him in two decades, I felt sadness.

I met Chuck in 1984 or 1985. I liked him from the "get-go." He was witty, sweet, and sometimes stubborn - a perfect combination. He had an intangible talent - people appreciated his company. His friend base was unlimited. I can't think of any clique that considered him an outsider.

Well brother it's another year. I miss you just as much as when we were both going to DC for poice week. All of the years we went never expecting one of our names to be on that damn wall we all love so much. You can be very proud Kevin Dee when the time came he stepped up to the plate in a big way. I am proud to call him my friend and you would be proud of the way he has taken care of Suzie. Of all the bad that has come from this I am so proud of how the gang stepped up to take care of Suzie. She has been well taken care of by those you knew you could count on. Hope you liked the limo this year, damn I wish you were there for a ride with us. I love you man and give Tanja a big hug for me.
