There are no words to describe anytime you hear the 3 beeps right before a call and trying to prepare your emotions for what the call may be. I grew up as an explorer with IPD, and I'm sure that's what saved my life when I left the explorer post I would always go to sleep with my scanner on I remember waking up to those 3 beeps and listening not to a call for help but a call for what had just transpired. That is something I never forgot. There are no words to describe how I felt that night. Thank you for your contributions to the people of Inglewood and to everyone around you. Thank you for being part of my LIFE.... RIP.

My name is Daniel Lee and I am a current recruit for class 400 in the Los Angeles Sheriff's Academy. I am working hard to be part of the law enforcement community and in particular the Inglewood Police Department family. Although I never had the honor of meeting Officer Fred Small, I have heard nothing but good things about him. I send my condolences to his family and friends. Officer Fred Small, I thank you for your service.

As a young Westminster police explorer I enjoyed many rides with you. It seems like yesterday. I don't know why but you always had me ride with you and I am grateful. I knew the cover shift with you meant we were going to get into something good. And always late night lunch at Norms. I always looked forward to countless football story's. You were a man who had been there and done it. R.I.P 47-45 Bravo

Today I was cleaning out my old emails and I ran across the email link I sent to our daughter Elesia Small on December 15th 2007 asking her to post her poem "the Heartache of Daddy's Little Girl". She wasn't strong enough then now that she is 21 years old I'll ask again maybe she's ready. She is seven classes from graduating with her Bachelors in Criminal Justice (wonder where she got that idea from:). Everytime we go to L.A. something is always missing. We all miss you so much although I know you are with us always. Until we see each other again your friend. Ronnetta Ellington

What's up Fred i can't believe that's its been 5 years now. I miss you so much. There isn't a day that goes by that I wish i could talk to you. We were the close of friends. I am trying to accomplish all of the things that we dreamed about. I still remember I last conversation, put it like this I remember everything. I wish you with all of us riding our new Honda motorcycles..they are fast but i really dont care for them. Your call sign will be 4M4 right about now. Dont worry about the family the kids are doing the fine and Robin is being Robin. I will do my best to make sure that no one will ever forget you..love you and miss you much.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.
