I had the pleasure to work with Matt on occasion and know that he was a good man and respected law enforcement officer.

To his family I give my deepest sympothy and thoughts. Matt will not be forgotten as he will sign in to service everyday with those who knew him.

Detective Andy Harbolt
Stevens County Sheriff's Office, Washington State

Matt,

Thank You for all the good times we had while working together in Soap Lake. I know we had our hard times with the normal Soap Lake Politics but we both were able to overcome them crazy forces against us and continue on with what I believe God truly wanted us to do, and that was to serve the People he intrusted us to serve. I was always proud of you and the way you were able to work your way back into Law Enforcement. God truly had a hand in your future just as he did last Friday Morning. I promise we will do all we can to take care of your family. I visited your Father Saturday. He is doing well but is very sad. We will be sure to get he and his family to Republic for the funeral. I never had a chance to Thank You for all you did for me so I will say it now. Thank You Matt for all you did to help me get my life in order and answer my call and that is to become one of God's Warriors right here on earth. You will be mised my friend.

To the family and friends of Undersheriff Lane:

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. Just reading that he even returned to the job after being shot makes me realize what a strong man he must have been to keep following that calling to be in law enforcement. May God bless and comfort you through this difficult time.

I am so sorry to hear of the untimely deaths of Under Sheriff Lane's and the civilian pilot. This demonstrates that no part of this job is "routine". I pray for their families, friends and colleagues.

The Under Sheriff died helping a lost woman. I remember the words of Jesus Christ:

"A man hath no greater love than this: that he might lay down his life for his friends".

The Under Sheriff was everyone's friend. He now patrols the streets of Heaven with St. Michael. God Bless and be safe.

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Matt be the be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Undersheriff Lane's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Matt is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Matt was well respected and well loved. Thank you for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please take care of my fiance Dennis.

Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!

There are but two persons who protect the sinful human race from destroying itself. One is God's Holy Spirit. The other is the Peace Officer. Without them, we would all perish at each other's hands.
According to Romans 13.1-5...
God ordains the Peace Officer’s profession.
The Peace Officer is sent by God.
The Peace Officer is vested with God's authority to enforce the law.
A Peace Officer's badge is to be honored by us, because it is honored by God.

To the family of Undersheriff Matt Lane and the Ferry County Sheriff's Department, your extended family of Law Enforcement Officers grieve with you during this time. I pray that God will wrap his loving arms around each of you and comfort you during this most difficult time.

To all my brothers and sisters, please remember the fallen officers we have lost. Remember the men and women who died trying to make this world a safer and better place for us all to live in.
May God be with you every day, please remember, we are a part of the largest family in the world and when one hurts we all hurt.

Though our badges and uniforms may be different, our mission is the same. Rest in peace with our other fallen Brothers and Sisters. We will continue the fight in your honor.
