Reflections for Police Officer Ryan Eugene Cappelletty

Thinking about you today... sometimes it feels like it was so long ago, and other times, it feels like it was yesterday. We all still miss you.

The courage to care;
The compassion to transform;
The willingness to serve;
The resolve to achieve;
The strength to conquer;
The drive to excel;
The character to emulate;
The laugh to admire;
The heart to respect;
The smile to win;
The soul to treasure;
and now
Our angel.

To Ryan's family, and dear Rachel, you're in my thoughts and prayers!

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Back in the academy when things got tough I only had to look over at Ryan, gutting it out, and usually smiling to himself, to find my own inner strength to persevere. The challenges and stresses of the job he handled like a champ, and provided inspiration to the rest of us. Forever ingrained in my memory is the day we were "trained" in the use of pepper spray. While the rest of the recruits (myself included) stumbled around blindly, whining, and looking for water, I heard someone chuckling quietly and calmly to themself. "What could be funny about a face full of pepper spray?" I wanted to know. It took both hands for me to pry one eye open, and there I saw Ryan with his hands on his hips, tears pouring out of his eyes, and the worlds biggest grin on his face. He was having the time of his life, because it was just one more hurdle he'd overcome on the path to achieving his lifelong dream of being a police officer. Pure in spirit and always full of heart, he was thoughtful, compassionate, tough, and a good friend. I looked up to him and his wife, as wonderful people, and miss him every day. Ryan was that rare type of person who always put helping others ahead of himself, and in the end he literally gave all that he could for the benefit of perfect strangers; because whether they were friends or strangers wouldn't have mattered to him, he was that good of a person. I admired him in life, and since his passing I remember him and am inspired by him every day of my life.
Whatever life throws at me, no matter how tough things may get, all's it takes is a quick look back at Ryan laughing off a face full of pepper spray to get me through. I've never used the term hero lightly, but Ryan is that, in every respect of the word. God bless him, Rachel, and the Cappelletty family; and God bless the men and women on the streets who risk all, every day, for the rest of us.

I truly believe that you can almost know someone by reading what others have written about them after they are gone. I know from reading these reflections that I would have liked to know Ofc. Cappelletty and I will forever be saddened that I was denied the chance. My thoughts and prayers are with your family, friends and fellow officers. Rest in peace, Sir.

I got to know Ryan my freshman year at Edinboro. He was the CJ club president and an RA in my building. He was a great guy and if he didn't graduate when he did I'm sure we would've become better friends. He taught me how to play racquetball and to this day he still crosses my mind when I play. Thank you, Ryan for your sacrifice, you will not be forgotten!
