Mike was a classmate of mine at the MSHP Academy. My first impression of Mike at the academy was that he was determined and did not appear to be afraid of anything. That impression never changed once we made it through field training and were on our own. Working an adjoining zone to Mike, I had the privilege to interact with him regularly and our friendship continued to grow over time. I'll always remember the times we were able to laugh and complain together when we met, whether it was on relays or making a stop at the TA. Rest in peace brother; you will always be remembered!

May Gods embrace make you whole and bring peace until your family is one day re-united in perfect joy.

My wife was an EMT called to the accident. It is still with her these many years later. You are still in the hearts and minds of so many. Hero.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 9th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

I pray for solace for all those that love and remember you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. Your family is in my heart's embrace. Thanks to your friends for sharing their memories and devotion to you through their reflections.

Rest In Peace.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I learned of Mike's story today after listening to Mike Nolte, the man officer Newton puled over that May morning in 2003. My heart goes out to his wife and family. I pray the work of your husband and father remains alive and well through your own words and deeds. Some are asked to serve only a short time on this Earth, but they leave a lasting impression and legacy for their loved ones to carry forward. I sense Mike was that kind of man. I know not a day that goes by that his loss is not felt by family, friedns and colleagues.

I drive by Trooper Newton's Memorial every couple of weeks. I've noticed the weather has disturbed the flowers, flags, etc. I've stopped in the past and re-mounted, straighten the tributes. Today again I stopped and cleared the flags, US and MO. I made a note of Officer Newton's name and Googled it. Now I know just a little of this fine LEO. When I stop again, and I will, I will have a face to see in my prayers. Memory Eternal.

To Mike's family,

I just finished reading some of the latest reflections and I noticed that there hasn't been one since April. Well just to let know, I haven't forgotten about Mike.

The other day CBS news from New York came out and did a piece on heroes. They interviewed the two men that helped at the scene. They also interviewed me. I have a strong faith in Jesus Christ and I have, with time, gotten peace with this. However, when Iam cruising past the 47 Iam reminded of Mike. Not necessarily that day, but just Mike. I walk into the zone office and his picture reminds me of him. So I guess, no I know, he touched my life. I think about the good times and try not to think about the bad time.

The other day me and another trooper went by an intersection that Mike, Brooks, and I conducted a spot check about two weeks prior to the wreck. It reminded me of the light heartedness attitude that Mike had. I enjoyed spending time with him.

If you guys ever need anything, minus a wild turkey or a large Missouri buck, let me know. If you ever just want to spend some time talking, you know how to get a hold of me.

God Bless
Bill
