MIKE,
THE FUN WE HAD WHILE WORKING WILL BE FOREVER ETCHED INTO
MY MEMORY. YOU ARE ONE OF THE GREAT ONES. I WILL MISS YOU.

"It's a sin to kill a mockingbird"... You are my true hero Michael, take care of Heaven's beat.
You will not be forgotten brother.

I just want to say how sorry i am to the Hartzell family, his fiance, and friends. My dad was also a Youngstown police officer who was killed in the line of duty when i was only 18 months old. I'm now 20 but at times it is still hard. Your family will get through this as mine did. You're in my thoughts & prayers.

To the family, co-workers and friends of Patrolman Hartzell: Many prayers are with you. As we take this week to remember our fallen brothers and sisters may we never forget them and the ultimate price they have paid. I will never understand why so many have to pay that price. Though I never knew Hartzell, he will always remain one of my brothers. God bless your family.

I will never forget the night you were taken from us. Words cannot express the hurt I felt hearing the radio transmission and realizing it was you.
I will never forget the good times we had in the academy, the good times on Tuesday nights when we went for wings, the good times at work & away from work. You were truely one of the most wonderful people I have ever met. You & Steph both mean so much to me. On 04-29-03, YPD tragically lost one of the finest officers to ever serve. You will ALWAYS be remembered & loved. Watch over us from Heaven my friend.
This poem was written by a friend of mine in your honor after she talked to me and heard of the tragedy and how much you meant to everybody who knew you. You touched so many lives in so many ways and you were a friend to all.
"TO MIKE"
NO TRUER FRIEND HAVE I EVER KNOWN,
THAN THE ONE I LOST TODAY.
WHO LEFT HIS EARTHLY HOME WITH US,
TO FLY UP HEAVEN'S WAY.
HE CHOSE A PERILOUS PATH IN LIFE,
THIS MAN WHO GAVE SO MUCH.
AND FILLED WITH JOY AND HAPPINESS,
EVERY SINGLE LIFE HE TOUCHED.
A FRIEND TO ME, A FRIEND TO ALL,
HIS LOYALTY A SHINING LIGHT.
A DEDICATED BROTHER IN ARMS,
WHO FOUGHT FOR WHAT WAS RIGHT.
THEY SAY THAT TIME CAN HEAL ALL WOUNDS
AND GROWN MEN SHOULDN'T CRY.
WHOEVER THEY ARE, THEY MUST NOT KNOW,
HOW IT FEELS TO SAY GOODBYE.
I'LL ALWAYS KEEP HIM IN MY THOUGHTS,
HIS BRAVERY AND HIS PLIGHT.
I'LL CARRY ON WHERE HE LEFT OFF,
IN MEMORY OF MY FRIEND MIKE.

A POLICEMAN'S PRAYER
Victorious St. Michael, you know how evil men are awake and plotting
while good men sleep. Even so was faithless Judas awake and betraying our
Lord while the Apostles slumbered in the Garden of Gethsemane.
Help me, powerful Archangel of God, to be always alert at my post, ever
ready to do my duty, and to apprehend criminals without fear or favor. Be
near me and my fellow police in times of peril and emergency, please. Defend
us by your power when we are in danger. Be sure to shield us from all
temptation and any occasion of sin. Help us to preserve our integrity and
retain God's love in every trial.
Just as you were able by God's power to cast Satan into hell, may we
always be able to control, subdue and confine malefactors and evildoers in
God's name. Amen.
In memory and honor of this fallen officer and hero to so many.

May God grant your family a comforting peace as you transcend this earthly bound. I have no doubt that God will meet you with open arms as you go forth to patrol the streets of heaven under his command. May God bless you, your family, friends, and all of the remaining peacemakers who will continue the watch here in your absence.

Mike,
As I write this I know you're working your beat in heaven watching over all of us. I will always remember the times we worked together, hearing your laugh and being your "Uncle Bob". The traggic night of 04-29-03 will never leave my mind, standing around in a parking lot laughing with each other and not knowing this would be the last time I would ever see or talk to you. My prayers go out to you, Steph and Family. God Bless You Brother, You Will Be Missed, But Not Forgotten!

I grew up in Youngstown, OH, I know the fine officers of YPD for they were the ones who kept my family and I safe at night as a child. Officer Hartzell will never be forgotten as with the rest of our fallen officer's who wear the badge. These officers always carried themselves in the finest of traditions and inspired me to become who I am today. My thoughts and prayers are with the YPD and Hartzell family.

I think of Stephanie all the time. I only met her once, but I can not imagine her pain. The thought of her losing Mike is terrible enough, but there remains the wedding plans. and all of his things as he left them. As I mother, I grieve for his parents. I could not stand losing one of my children.
Here is to you ,Officer Mike Hartzell, may you rest in peace. You will always be remembered. I am thankful that we had you in our lives.

Mikey,
I feel compelled to write this since I have always viewed you and Kevin as my "other brothers" growing up. Not a day went by when I did not see you smiling or hear your infectious laugh. May God bless you in your duty to guard the gates of heaven. Nan, Papa and my Dad are certainly taking care of you in your new home.
Look after your Mom, Dad, Kevin and Stephanie. Be their guardian angel. They miss you greatly.
You served us proud, and I am so thankful to have known you in my life. I thank you for the endless games of kickball, playing Star Wars in the backyard, making "stew" in the rocks and lazy afternoons at Wedgewood pool.
You are truly a hero in every right and were given a hero's salute.
Thank you, Michael Thomas Hartzell, for keeping us all safe. God Bless you now and forever. Much love to you, my "other brother".

GOD SPEED MY BROTHER IN BLUE. ALTHOUGH I ONLY KNEW YOU FOR A SHORT TIME, THE LIGHT YOU LEFT IN STEPHANIE'S EYES SHOWED ME WHAT A WONDERFUL MAN YOU WERE. WE WILL WATCH OVER HER AND BE HERE FOR HER IN THE COMING DAYS, MONTHS, AND YEARS. I SO LOOKED FORWARD TO WATCHING YOU WALK DOWN THE ASILE TOGETHER IN AUGUST. SADLY, THAT DAY WILL NEVER COME. REST IN PEACE WE WILL CONTINUE THE FIGHT. GOD BLESS YOU AND YPD. MY HEART GOES OUT TO YOU, YOUR FAMILY, AND STEPH.
