Reflections for Detective Charles Randal Smith

Rest in peace Officer Smith. I only found this site on March 14, 2004, when my nephew, Officer John Logan of the Huntington, Texas Police Department was shot and killed. It breaks my heart everytime I see another HERO lost. May GOD bless you and your family.

My name is Darrin Decoster and I am a Police Officer with the Fairfax County Police Department in Virginia. I am riding in the 2004 Unity Tour. The ride is on mountain bikes from Chesapeke Virginia to the Police memorial in Washington D.C. The reason I am writing this is to let you know that I am riding in memory of Randy. I have been asked to wear a braclelet with Randy's name on it while doing the ride. I also live in the D.C. area and would be happy to do anything I could for the family. Please let me know if there is anything I can do. I am sorry for your loss.

B-do, I am just sitting here thinking about you. I went by to see you today but it was raining. Just wishing you were here for the holidays. I did not even go to the Christmas Party this year. I think back pretty often lately of last year's party. It was wild and crazy for all of us. Drank a lot and laughed even more. People were talking for a long time after that. But as we both know, people always talk. It doesnt matter what you say or do. I will go for now. Someone is calling me on my cell phone as usual.

Thinking of you and missing you always

Guaranteed Things

The past several months have been quite a slow go
Like watching from afar a mystifying show
The nights and days have become just a blur
A hellish nightmare from which one can't stir

Then without any knowledge of how it could be
The blur goes away and we start to clearly see
A strength from within holds us up for the fight
With a warm inner peace, our soul becomes light

When A Police Officer dies, there are some guaranteed things
Most surely of which is that their badge turns into wings
Wings of an Angel that they will now be
Not confined by the body, their souls to fly free

If they could talk to us now, they would likely just say
Remember me often at least once a day
When you feel warmth surround you, as you lay down at night
Know that it's me, saying I'm ok… it's alright

They may be gone from our sight, but not from our heart
Making ready for us, when it's our time to part
Together again… we will all someday be
Giving strength to others, because now… we fly free

Just thinking and missing you.

B-Do,

You are the greatest! Thank You for always being
there to protect me and my family. Evangeline Parish lost a great friend and officer. The saddest time in my life as an investigator with the coroner's office was on April 16, 2003, when my phone rang. You were always there, again THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family and fellow deputies of Deputy Smith.

While many of us in law enforcment wear different colored uniforms, we all share a common goal. We protect society from the criminal element. Rest well my friend, those of us who remain will cover your place on the thin blue line.

Not many people understand what we go through on a daily basis, missing out on holidays and time with family and friends, I would have given anything to be with you that day. You gave your life for something bigger than all of us. Because of you, two departments have come together like no other time. We executed the first of many warrants this past week, and everyone felt you with us. I just want to thank you, for having my back. We will always remember you.

TO MY FELLOW OFFICER & FRIEND
I,LL NEVER FORGET THE DAY I RECEIVED THE INFO OF THE DAY YOU ANSWERED THE FINAL CALL.
AT THE HOSPITAL , LIL RANDY ASKED ME IF YOU HAD GOTTEN THE CHANCE TO DRAW YOUR WEAPON , I MADE IT WELL KNOWN TO YOUR SON THAT YOU DID NOT GO DOWN WITHOUT A FIGHT & THAT YOU WENT AS A HERO. LIL RANDY LOOKED AT ME WITH RELIEF AND SMILED.
HAVE YOU NO WORRY MY BROTHER, AS YOU KNOW, YOUR FELLOW OFFICERS WILL BE THERE FOR YOUR FAMILY .
YOU LIE THERE AND REST WITH NO WORRY.
WHEN GOD IS READY, WE WILL WALK THE BEAT ON HAVEN'S STREET TOGETHER!

YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN

B-do, I am sitting here thinking about you and how much I wish I could hear your voice and that silly little laugh. Tommorrow at the Civic Center there will be a memorial to honor you. I am sure you will be watching over everyone and wanting us to all be strong. It is so hard, though. I am so proud of you. I remember when you told me that you made investigator. You had a grin from ear to ear and you were so happy. I gave you a big hug and told you "Congradulations". Boy if I could just have that smile back. You made things just seem not quite as bad, when things were not going my way. I miss you dearly and want you to know that I have never been more proud of anyone in my life.

B-Do,
As the days go by, it's still hard to believe that you are not here with us. I can still see you when you were a little boy running around in those little red shorts at the City Pool. I am so proud of all of your accomplishes in life. You will always be my gentle giant. Don't worry about Theresa and Little Randy, we will always watch over them and we will always remind Little Randy what a great man, friend and police officer you were. We will always love you and thank you for watching over us. Your friend forever...

What a tragedy for the family, friends, and coworkers of Deputy Smith. Take comfort in knowing you have a guardian angel in heaven...patrolling a better beat.
May peace be with all of you.

Confrontation in an alley.
The Centurion does not yield.
But this time the good guy loses;
there is blood upon the shield.

And the mournful sounds of bagpipes
play out across the land,
drowned out by the sobs of a lonely young wife
and a child too young to understand.

While the killer pleads his case in court,
the thin blue line is one man short.
And we're one step closer to society's fall;
another cop's name is engraved on the wall.

Another state funeral, with an army in blue,
and we know it could've been me and it could've been you.
We all look ahead to what the future has in store,
front line troopers in a country that's at war.

At war with itself and at war with its cops and we're
out there every day 'cause the battle never stops.
It's not the way it is on TV shows or like
we learned in school; no cool music in the background,

no playing by the "rules";

We're disillusioned warriors,
but for right we'll always strive.
We just pray that at the end of our stress-filled day
we'll get back home alive.

You stand out on the corner
ignoring the insults and the stares,
close to the point of believing that no one really cares,
when a six year-old boy walks over after watching
you for awhile, reaching out to shake your hand,
on his face a friendly smile.

To him you are a hero,

a protector of our land, and he wants
to learn about you,
as a cop and as a man.

And when he asks you why your badge is covered
by a black elastic band,
tell him about our Brother
A cop who made a stand.

My friend and brother:

We miss you more than words can say. Thinking of the times we
watched you with your family, the love you always have for us
unwavering and true. You are gone from our lives now, living
on in our hearts. No more big B-Do to laugh and tease. Thank
you for all that you have given, more than anyone of us asked
for.

Death is so final
It is not fair.
Know that we miss you
We will always care.
You were the one
they called late at night,
To take down a dealer
or break up a fight.
Thanks for the memories
that fill up my mind.
A truer brother and friend
I never shall find.
Though not many thanked you
You gave it your all.
We just never thought we'd
lose you on a call.
Now that you are gone
we wish that we had
let you know how your leaving
would make us so sad.
Your smile and your laughter
your anger and fear
all of these we will always
hold dear.
All we have now are
the memories of you.
Just so you know
we have always loved you.

You will always be with us B-Do. Goodbye my friend and
brother.

B-do, I could never imagine missing someone as much as I miss you. Sometimes it is almost unbearable. During those times I try to think of what you would do to make me laugh. I am sure that you would do everything under the sun to find out what was bothering me and I would simply say nothing. You always knew better and ended up prying it out of me and you ALWAYS ended up making me laugh. I went to visit you today. I usually go every day. People that pass probably think that I am crazy. I guess that that is the only thing that makes all of this seem real. Sometimes I even forget that you are not here. I almost speak your name. I had to track down some information on what happened to you today at the office and get some details and I almost couldn't do it. But I was strong. It was so hard to talk about you in the past tense. I will be missing you and thinking about you always.

B-Do, I miss you, my only consolation in your death is that i know where you are, and i feel that you are watching over us. i will never forget your acts of kindness and your never ending willingness to assist, nor will i ever forget how good you were with kids, the extra time you gave and the good counsel to them before they ever got to me made a difference in their response to my actions. You are and always will be a true blue, an honor to our profession, I still don't know why you had to go, but we love you an we always will, rest in peace my friend.

To the wife of Deputy Smith: I am truly sorry for your great loss. I understand your pain first hand. I was married to Jay Carruth (E.O.W. 2/20/03), for 8 years. We have 2 little girls together. You will get through this. It takes time. Look at your little boy, and remember your husband, for he will always be with you. My girls have been my saving grace through this tragedy. We have to go on for our children. The hardest part is simply living day to day. You and your son are in my daily prayers. May God bless you and give you peace.

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Randy be the be the last to die this way.

Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Deputy Smith's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out especially to his children. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Randy is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Randy was well respected and well loved. Thank you for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please take care of my fiance Dennis.

Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!

To the partner I always dreamed of having. Together we were unstopable for acomplishing. Just know that the partnership that we had together could never be replaced. Besides being a partner you were a true friend, something that also does not come around often. I will always miss and love you B-Do, but remember you will always be with me on any call I answer.
