You gave the ultimate sacrifice. You may be gone, but you will NEVER be forgotten. We are all family in this job, sometimes we are the only family each other has. In pace requiescat, Rest in peace! Keep a watch on the rest of us as we go on shift each day.
"When you were born, you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life in such a way that when you die, the world will cry and you will rejoice." (American Indian Prayer)

Brother warrior, may you rest in peace. We will miss you, but you will not be forgottten. You were one of us and will always be one of:
"Our Finest"
Not like the cops and robbers on a prime time TV show,
Nor like the sheriff in the old west who would face and shoot the foe,
The officers who guard our streets are mortals, as we all,
Who choose to work for a greater good and in their work stand tall.
Standing a hedge against the forces that seek to hurt and kill, Each day they risk body and mind, their duty to fulfill.
And when the dreaded call goes out that one of them is down, With loyalty and amazing speed the fraternity gathers 'round.
They protect us from ourselves, they protect us from each other; No finer service can be performed than to stand in harm's way for another.

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will he and Jose be the be the last to die this way.
Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Herrera's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. My heart goes out to you all. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Just know that my thoughts are with you.
Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Jose is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Jose was well respected and well loved. Thank you for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please take care of my fiance Dennis.
Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!

How sad, a fine young officer just doing his job was struck down by such a vile and cowardly person. We are all in the family of the badge, so we all share in the loss, even though we wear different uniforms.
I pray for this brave departed officer, his family, friends and colleagues. He now patrols the streets of Heaven with St. Michael.
His loss is not in vain, we all appreciate his service to his community and to this great nation.
God Bless and be safe.

May God grant your family a swift closure and comforting peace. In your absence, may he somehow assure them that you have transcended from this Earthly bond to the ultimate duty -- patroling the streets of heaven under God's command. Rest easy knowing that your brothers and sisters in arms will continue the fight, and eventually join you for a reunion in a far better place than this. Your devotion to duty will stand as an example to many others that follow you. God speed to your assignment, and God bless the remaining peacemakers.
