Reflections for Sergeant Jose Arturo "Joe" Herrera
My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family and coworkers of Officer Herrera.
While many of us in law enforcment wear different colored uniforms, we all share a common goal. We protect society from the criminal element. Rest well my friend, those of us who remain will cover your place on the thin blue line.

I was priveleged to have you as a supervisor, a brother in blue, and most of all, a close friend. You are sorely missed. Your brothers that remain will continue in the fight. "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in Hell." Matthew 10:28.

Joe is THE hero. Jeremy and I are so grateful that we go the chance to meet such a wonderful person through his wife, Rachael. They would come down and visit every few weeks or so and we truly enjoyed the company. We will miss the sweet "Thank You" notes left laying around the house by Joe before leaving our home. There are many words to describe this fine young man, the list is too long, but I will mention a few, HERO, sweet, loving, true, fun, warrior, humorous, respectful, great father and all around an AWESOME person. The experience of the two of us being at the hospital, staying up for numerous hours (huh Rach?) was the best experience and best time EVER spent in our lives. It was an honor and a privilege for me to be in the room with Joe and Rachael and watch little Victoria (Joe's look alike) take her first breath of life. The memories will be with us forever. Rest in peace Joe, we love you, miss you dearly and one day we will all be together again. Until then, we will continue to love, support and take care of Rachael and Victoria, have no worries. You made us all strong. Also, we will continue eating Wienerschnitzel and burgers for ya :). Love and miss you.

Joe, was the kind of officer that you would always want to back you up. Joe, was an excellent officer all the way around but I believe his passion was finding dope! I also have a passion for the same thing and I learned alot from Joe in this area. I wish I would have told him how much I learned from him but I did not get the chance. I remember searching a van one night west of town. The driver had already told me that the weed was in the vehicle but I had left the passenger inside the vehicle while speaking to the driver. After talking to the driver, I obviously decided to search the vehicle. I then got the passenger out and she denied any knowledge of the dope. I thought well I find it because the driver said it was there. Joe, being Joe, was already on his way to assist me, out in the county. Little did I know, the female passenger had hidden the dope in a different place while I was talking to the driver. So, now the dope was even hidden from the driver. I started searching and searching and I could not find anything but signs of dope. I bet I searched the car for fifteen min. and found nothing. Joe shows up and I tell him what I got. Joe goes up to the car and finds the dope within five minutes. She had stuffed the dope in a water bottle that I had passed over several times. Joe just smiled and handed me the weed.
I worked with Joe for about 3 1/2 years and these are the kinds of memories that I have of Joe. These are the types of memories that I will always have. I feel very blessed to have known and worked with Sgt. Joe Herrera. I just wish on April 13, 2003 that maybe Joe would have not backed me up! But I know that that was not the type of man or officer that Joe was. If you called, he came running. I will continue the pursuit just as Joe would if he were here but I will very much mess his company in the pursuit!!!!!!!!!!

Joe was a hero to all. We love and miss him dearly. I love you Joe with all my heart and soul and forever will. Your baby girl will always know what a hero you were and will always be. I will tell her about all our great memories together and how happy you were when she was born and the day we got married. You made me so happy and my heart is so deeply burdened with sorrow. You can never be replaced in my heart or Victoria's heart. We will be reunited together one day again. I will work in blue in honor of you. You made me strong and I won't let you down. I love you, Baby!!

It doesn't surprise anyone in law enforcement that Officer Herrera would respond the way he did, it is just another example of how we are to "protect and serve" 24-7. Most civilians get off work and don't give their jobs a second thought until 9am the next morning. You are just one more Hero entering the gates of Heaven for a well deserved break from hell. Thank you for your selfless service. To his family and friends, his times with you will provide timeless memories for you to cherish until you meet again. My prayers for you all.
