Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Michael Eron Shannon
Dearest FOP members… I am not a policeman… just a retired disabled serviceman who has had a nice part time job within the town of Rome… my job is to go out and take care of the little towns parks and recreation areas… paint… clean restrooms… mow lawns and trim and weed whack trees and areas..
One of my jobs along with fellow employees… is to help maintain the SPRING BRANCH CEMETERY in which Deputy Shannon is interred.. everytime I went there be it by myself, or with others my heart would always sink a little just mowing the area around his headstone… as there is a metal hook decoration behind his headstone… where I took a plastic bouquet of flowers that someone had just laid on top of the nearby waste receptacle… I wiped it off as gently as I could.., and placed it upon the hook… to my knowledge it’s still there… I know this sounds crazy… as I never met “Mikeee”…. As we share the same “nickname” in our lives… I spent 24 years in the military… and all my friends and CO’s called me that.. I just wanted to say how sorry I am having heard how he passed… your up there now, Deputy Shannon…. But just know that I lovingly tend your resting place as well as the other dearly departed…here on earth.. when it’s time to take care of it.. I hope to see you one day when it’s my turn to meet HIM… God bless you and rest you, Michael.. ☦️
sincerely,
Michael John Raysses

Mikee, you were my best friend! it has taken me a long time to visit this page. You were my dispatch partner. You always had my back! I have so many memories of the goofy things that happened over the years. It was truly a pleasure to be your friend. You were such a kind person. I often wonder what kind of trouble you would be instigating now! or would you have children that we could corrupt? or where your law enforcement career would have taken you? Still miss you today and will never forget. Rest Easy and keep watching over all of us in this profession.

I was a friend of 'Mikey". He truly was the kind of person that brightened everybody's day. He always had a quick smile and a positive word. I am sure he would have had a beautiful family, if he hadn't been robbed of the lifespan he deserved.

Hey Mike,
Every few days I look at ODMP and knew that soon I would be seeing your memorial. As we all remember when a loved one is taken from us there are times when we question the reasons and never realize the answers. Your sacrifice will never be forgotten by your family, friends, and the law enforcement community that knew you as well as those who didn't (like me) but respect you for your service and sacrifice. Know that you will never be forgotten.

After spending 28 years with the Adams Co. Sheriff's dept and being involved and watching other officers having so many close calls, I thought I had escaped it all after retiring in 2002. I had already known the pain of losing friends and loved ones, especially after spending two years in Vietnam. I was not prepared to hear the news of your passing. Our loss of you was especially tragic as you were so young, full of life, and a kind and gentle spirit. I wish I had been there to protect you!!!
Your brotherhood and my brothers in Vietnam share the same good intentions. We "Sheep Dogs" attempt to protect the herd of sheep, are only wanted when the Wolf is around. Few will remember yet those of the few that do, I take pride to be a part of them. I/We will never forget.
Some say that heaven is a place where all your dogs wait for you. I believe that as well as all those heroes that went before us. I pray that I see you all one day.

On August 24, 2012, Adams County dedicated a memorial for Officer Shannon. This revived his memory and renewed the loss that his family and friends have felt. But what a joy to know that he is also remembered in this way. May God comfort you and sustain his memory.
