What is a Hero? That would be you. I know as you look down and upon all of us you are smiling and shaking your head yes at the legacy that you have left. I remember as a little child my Grandpa pulling out a crumpled cloth and carefully unwrapping it to reveal to me ,your pocket watch. The smile on his face and his respectful hands showed while holding this beloved treasure is engraved into my heart and mind. The end of that story made me
know, I was part of something special; being a Mayfield.
You will always be a hero to your Mayfield clan. I can say you make us proud through the integrity, honor and selfless service to your community but also for being the kind of man that is a example for us all. Much love and respect.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 86th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
Time never dimishes respect, and your memory will always be honored and revered. I am sure you are proud that your family continues your legacy of protecting and serving.
Rest In Peace

I often think of the work that Daniel did, the job that took him from his family and friends. I guess it affects me more because I walked in on that same bank, the Lanesville Farmer's State bank 60 years later during a bank robbery. As I stood there with a gun in my face and couldn't see any of my friends behind the counter because they were face down on the floor, fear swept through me. I wondered if I would pass our or be brave like Daniel. The thing that kept me upright until knocked under the Christmas tree in the corner by the one holding the gun on me was the fact that my son was with me. For the first time I had left him locked in the car instead of taking him out in the cold. Not sure what I would have done if they would have pointed the gun at my 2 1/2 year old son. Things happen for a reason. Daniel was an officer for a reason, my brother Thomas is an officer and so is one of my nephews. Appreciate those who put their lives on the line, for us, even so many years ago. Let's not forget them.

Daniel even though you've been gone for 83 years your spirit
lives on in your grandchildren. Your family could not be more proud of you. We can only imagine what you went through
on that day back in 1926. I'm sure you were highly respected
by everyone that knew you. I would like to thank you for your bravery and courage on behalf of your family and the citizens of New Albany. You will never be forgotten! Your

I grew up in Floyd County and served with the Floyd County Police / Sheriff's Office for 10 years before moving to Florida. I first learned of Daniel Mayfield there and often spoke of his murder while instructing classes at Floyd County and now in Florida. GOD bless you for your service my brother.

It has been 80 years and you are still remembered. Although we have not met, I feel as if I know you. I am trying to "dig up" our family tree so we will all live on with our future families knowing all about us.

I felt in some ways we crossed paths Daniel. My understanding was you were trying to apprehend men who were robbing the Farmer's State Bank in Lanesville. Well, 60 years later I walked in on a bank robbery in that same bank and wash held in there with a gun at my face until they left. I thought about how your life ended and wondered if mine would also, fortunately I was spared but again, the robbers were never caught. The day after my name came out in the paper as the only eye witness my home burned down, I may be wrong, but it felt like a sign from them to keep quiet. I am very proud of your service and all the others who serve in Floyd County or anywhere else and put their lives on the line for all of us.

Although you passed almost 50 years before my birth, I frequently heard of you and the legacy you left behind. My Daddy, your grandson, has all of the original newspapers announcing your murder. As a child I read the entire newspapers front to back in hopes of learning more about you. And today I pass that information on to my children. My 7 year old son talks about you so frequently that he has written a book about you as a 1st grader. You are still in our hearts and your legacy lives on! You will NEVER be forgotten!!
