Reflections for Lieutenant Glenn Harold Hicks
"A Part of America Died"
Somebody killed a policeman today,
and a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect,
will be buried with him at his side.
The suspect that shot him will stand up in court,
with counsel demanding his rights.
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids,
and spend many long, lonely nights.
The beat that he walked was a battle field too,
just as if he'd gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
to his name they will add a gold star.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
a cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
and he stands at each new rookie's side.
He answered the call, of himself gave his all,
and a part of America died.
I love you Paw

My dad was an officer
and a Hero every day.
He made this world a safer place
for you and me to stay.
A Hero who sadly offered
the news too hard to give.
A Hero who prevented tragedy,
allowing us to live.
A Hero you asked directions from
when lost or out of town.
A Hero who aided those in need,
allowing ease to get around.
A Hero who returned your child
when danger threatened near.
A Hero who protected freedom
so we'd have less to fear.
Yes, my dad was a Hero sir,
which he showed in every way.
But, today he is a Hero sir,
because of the price he had to pay.

The Final Inspection"
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

Angel In Blue
A fallen hero
an angel in blue
strong and brave
his heart ever true
He vowed to protect
no matter the pain
men, women and children
in sunshine and rain
His badge was more
than a shining pin
it was honesty, sacrifice
glowing from within
He gave of his time
his love and his life
adored his family
and loved his life
Never counting the cost
he never gave up hope
even when all seem lost
between guns and dope
His time on the streets
came to an end
now he was leading
the men from within
His time in office
came to a close
now he and his badge
retirement chose
A gun blast rang out
his chest felt tight
he was fading fast
losing his fight
As his life slipped away
an angel appeared
your time here is over
youve served your best
Its time to come home
we here have need of you
you wont be forgotten
youre an angel in blue.

"Police Week"
The time has now come, for this one week a year
When we all stop to think when we all shed a tear
For all of the Heroes, whose names grace the wall
And for all of those Heroes, who still answer the call
Family and friends at the wall they will stand
With pictures, letters, and love in their hands
Left at the wall will be displays of their love
A tribute to those who now watch from above
They will think of the day their world was destroyed
A split second in time causing such a great void
As they visit the wall, there is great pain in their heart
But strangely its there that the healing can start
As they stand there in awe of this memorial stone
It is then that they realize that they are not alone
So many others with stories quite the same
So many more sharing each others pain
Let us all stop and think what this weeks all about
Its for those who sacrifice for us day in and day out
And for each name engraved by the stone cutters knife
There are hundreds of people touched by that life
Although its just a week, seven days from the year
Its a lifetime of anxiety, emotions and fear
For most that will ease when the ceremony ends
But this week, lasts forever for family and friends

Brother today marks 8 years sense we lost you, and I miss you as much today as I did the first day. It's been really hard, but the Lord has helped us get through. I know John blames himself for what happened but we know God has a plan that we don't always understand. There are somethings beyond our control that we cant change, no matter what we do. I know your in a better place and at peace in the presents of the Lord and watching over us, and that one day we will all be together in heaven for every, and every. We love you and will never forget the great sacrifice you made for our county, and you will always live on in our hearts as a great hero.

Wow Glenn:
It has been 7 years. I remember listening to the SO radio comin back from the western justice academy in my patrol car that afternono, just minutes after you were taken from us. I could tell something was wrong but I didn't know what till I called dispatch. It hit me like a KO punch. It killed Avery County too in a way. From the time of your death till your funeral was a sad time that I still recall as a gloomy and dark time. I still miss you my friend and often wonder if maybe I should have told you to not be a FT deputy, but I know you died doing what you dreamed of doing and no one could have died under more noble and heroic circumstances. I really miss you my friend. I know that Heaven has a good officer on its beat. I keep in touch with all the folks back down in NC. You will never be forgotten Glenn and I am proud to have known you. God Bless.
