There are but two persons who protect the sinful human race from destroying itself. One is God's Holy Spirit. The other is the Peace Officer. Without them, we would all perish at each other's hands.

According to Romans 13.1-5...
God ordains the Peace Officer’s profession.
The Peace Officer is sent by God.
The Peace Officer is vested with God's authority to enforce the law.
A Peace Officer's badge is to be honored by us, because it is honored by God.

To the Family of Officers Jay Carruth and David Ezernack
and the Alexandria Police Department, your extended family of Law Enforcement Officers grieve with you during this time. Though our badges are different, rest in peace with the other fallen Heros, my brother. We will continue the fight in your honor.

The sacrifice you made speaks volumes for the bravery of yourself, and of all those who wear the sheild.

Rest well, young man, for God has a special place for those who keep His children safe.

As always it is with great sadness that we say goodbye to more Heros lost in the war against evil. They are all flying high with others gone befor them, now patrolling streets of gold. Thank you, Officer Carruth, for your selfless service and dedication. To his family, friends, and co-workers, keep his memories close and he will be with you always....

My thoughts

The Badge

It is polished and shiny and looks so fine.
Once you earn it you have to tow the line.
The minute you wear it upon your chest
it becomes a symbol that you are the best.
It means honesty, integrity, and fairness to all.
Your life is never your own, but at the publics call.
Night or day, any hour, it makes you a mark.
It doesn't protect you from a shot in the dark.
Over the years the shine starts to fade,
but brighter still is the man its made.
It is often what seperates you from the crowd.
It is a second family of which you are proud.
So now comes your time, you can't be denied.
When you pin on your badge, wear it with pride
The minute you wear it upon your chest
it becomes a symbol that you are the best.

I Am The Officer"

I have been where you fear to be,
I have seen what you fear to see,
I have done what you fear to do -
All these things I have done for you.

I am the person you lean upon,
The one you cast your scorn upon,
The one you bring your troubles to -
All these people I've been for you.

The one you ask to stand apart,
The one you feel should have no heart,
The one you call "The Officer in Blue,"
But I'm just a person, just like you.

And through the years I've come to see,
That I am not always what you ask of me;
So, take this badge ... take this gun ...
Will you take it ... will anyone?

And when you watch a person die
And hear a battered baby cry,
Then do you think that you can be
All these things you ask of me?

THE POLICEMAN LAST ROLE CALL
THE POLICEMAN’S LAST ROLE CALL

THE POLICEMAN STOOD AND FACED HIS GOD, WHICH MUST ALWAYS COME TO PASS. HE HOPED HIS SHOES WERE SHINING, JUST AS BRIGHTLY AS HIS BRASS. "STEP FORWARD NOW, POLICEMAN. HOW SHALL I DEAL WITH YOU? HAVE YOU ALWAYS TURNED THE OTHER CHEEK? TO MY CHURCH HAVE YOU BEEN TRUE?"

THE POLICEMAN SQUARED his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain’t. Because those of us who carry badges can’t always be a Saint. I’ve had to work most Sundays, and at times my talk was rough, and sometimes I’ve been violent because the streets are awfully tough. But I never took a penny that wasn’t mine to keep, though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills just got to steep. And I never passed a cry for help, though times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I’ve wept many unmanly tears. I know I don’t deserve a place among the people here, they never wanted me around except to calm their fear. If you’ve a place for me Lord, it needn’t be so grand. I never expected or had too much, but if you don’t, I’ll understand."

There was silence all around the throne where the Saints had often trod. As the policeman waited quietly, for the judgement of his God. "Step forward now, policeman, you’ve borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat on Heaven’s streets, you’ve done your time in hell."

For the family of fallen Officers:

We are with you as you grieve.
Our hearts are heavy too.
We feel the loss and struggle to comprehend it.
We pray for strength and comfort, for understanding and for perfect peace.
We pay our respects and give honor to the one you love and have lost.
We are all around you.
We will stand by you.
We are sincere when we say, “If you need anything, you just have to ask.”
You will know us by our badges.
We will not forget.

Gates of Fire, by Stephen Pressfield

"This is my shield.
I bear it before me into battle,
but it is not mine alone.
It protects my brother on my left.
It protects my city.
I will never let my brother
out of its shadow
nor my city out of its shelter.
I will die with my shield before me
facing the enemy."

John 15:13 "Greater Love has no man than this: That he give his life for his friends."

It is with great sadness that i sit here, reading about another one of my brothers has passed. To the family of Officer Carruth my depest condolences are with you cause no one truly knows ur pain. My prayers are with you.

To the family friends and fellow officers of the Alexandria Police Department. I wish to extend my deepest sympathy and condolences to all of you in your time of sorrow. I knew officer Carruth personally and he was a good man and a fine officer he will be deeply missed by all that knew and loved him. I had the pleasure of meeting him when I worked with the Rapides Parish Sheriffs Department and I will miss him deeply. Officer McClellan Troy Texas P.D.

My fiance, Dennis McElderry, was the first law enforcement casualty of 2003. It saddens me to know that Dennis was not the first to die in the line of duty, nor will Jay be the be the last to die this way. Having gone through the pain of losing Dennis I can truly understand and feel the pain that Officer Carruth's family, friends, and co-workers must be feeling. I wish I could give you a few words of wisdom to help you through this tough time, but there isn't anything I can really say or do to make the situation better. Please know that my thoughts are with you.

Please accept my condolences on behalf of the McElderry family and remember that Jay is part of huge law enforcement family. If you ever need anything any number of them will be there for you (as I've quickly found out!) From reading the many reflections posted here, I am certain Jay was well respected and well loved. Thank you for a job well done and for helping to make this world a safer place for us all. Please take care of my fiance Dennis.

Peace, Love, Luck, and Happiness!

As a past resident of Louisiana stationed at Ft. Polk, it deeply saddens me to know that officers of a city I frequented often had their lives taken. My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Alexandria and to the families of all of your officers.

"That man is successful who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much, who has gained the respect of the intelligent men and the love of children; who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; who leaves the world better than he found it, whether by an improved poppy, a perfect poem, or a rescued soul; who never lacked appreciation of earth's beauty or failed to express it; who looked for the best in others and gave the best he had."- Robert Louis Stevenson
