Reflections for Police Officer Eric Eugene DeWit
My heart aches reading your page. You were so young, and your baby never got to know you in person. My thoughts and prayers are with her and all who love and miss you.
You are not forgotten.

Happy 31st Birthday Son!
I would give anything to have you here to celebrate another birthday with your family. Ever since you were taken from us eight years ago, life has been surreal. Not a day goes by that I don't "see" you smiling, "hear" your voice, or feel the pain of losing you. Our family is close, your daughter is beautiful and good things are happening. I like to think that you are behind it all! Please keep watch over your family.
Love you forever and ever,
Mom

Happy Birthday Son!
Today is your 30th birthday. Your daughter, Kylie, wanted to bake you a cake, so we did. She spent the day with her Grammie and Grampie! She brought flowers to your grave. I hope you are watching her grow, because she is the light of our lives. You would be so proud of her!! It's been almost seven years since you left us. We still miss you terribly and the pain never goes away. Please keep us all going from wherever you are.
Love you forever and ever,
Mom

Eric,
I was looking through some old photographs and came across our Academy graduation photo. Each time I hear about one of ours who has fallen I think of you. RIP my Blue Brother.

Forgive me for missing the anniversary of your E.O.W., but I felt as though I could not continue to read about so many tragedies. I now realize the visit each day to leave a word of encouragement and hope to the loved ones of others, helps me to remember that I am not alone with my pain and heartbreak. So may I say to your friends and loved ones that my thoughts and prayers are with them now and always. Continue to keep watch over them and those still out on patrol and may they know you will never be forgotten.

To the family and loved ones of Officer Eric DeWit:
I wanted to honor and remember Eric on the sixth anniversary of his tragic death. Although I never had the privilege of meeting Eric, I feel as if I know him through the loving reflections left by family and friends. His valor and service will never be forgotten.
I hope that God is holding him in the sweetest part of his heart and the most gentle part of his soul.
I am so sorry that Eric was robbed of his life so young, but through the profound sense of duty with which he lived his life, he made an immeasurable difference. May his spirit continue to soar and may his memory continue to inspire.
To his wife, daughter, and mother Dariel, I am so sorry for your loss and know that your life was forever changed by the death of your beloved husband, father, and son. I know that he is forever in your hearts. I wish for you that you are able to live the hopes and dreams he has for your life.
This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Eric gave to his community and the citizens of Illinois, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on February 17, 2003.

Happy 29th Birthday, Son...
Another year without you, but another year closer to the day that I will see you again! You know your mother will never leave you alone - even in death. The pain is still unbearable; our family will forever be incomplete without you here. Your dad, your brothers and your daughter are my life. Without them and the wonderful memories of you, I could not go on. Your daughter has your personality, which is truly amazing and bittersweet at the same time. We are so fortunate to be part of her life.
I am thankful to see that your memory lives on in the hearts of the people who still write on your website. They have no idea of what it means to me.
Love you forever, Son.

Our daughter will be starting kindergarten next week and i can't believe how fast time flys. She is so excited to meet new friends and have a new teacher( i wonder where she gets thatLOL) She loves to hear stories of you and see pictures. She is proud that her daddy was a police officer and tells everyone she meets about you. I'm sure you like hearing that.
Love you forever,

Happy Birthday Son....
Today you would have been 28 years old. I miss you terribly and, at times, can barely stand it. The pain will always be there as you have taken a big chunk of my heart with you. I am sure you can feel your family's love - wherever you are.
Love forever, Mom

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Eric,
I spent Christmas with your family and mine last weekend. I made Kylie a scrapbook of her first 5 years and of course you were in it. You only held her for a month and a day but you are her Daddy now and forever. She is such a wonderful little girl. A girl you are proud of I know. Take care and keep an eye on your Uncle Neil. Know that I think of you so often. Merry Christmas.
Love,

Brother, it's been so long. We miss you so much and think of you often. We still have that picture of you and Ken at graduation proudly displayed. Ken keeps a picture of you in his locker at work, too. A little reminder of the ultimate sacrifice you made. I know that you watch over him and all the other members of the blue family.
We miss your smile but we know that you're smiling down on us from above.
