Reflections for Police Officer Sheila Herring
Working with you was one of the greatest experiences of my life. You knew how to bring out the best in each of us.
Roll Call's will never be the same!
Officer R. Kinney
Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel Police Department
Sheila, I don't make it to this page very often but when I do it makes me realize that we don't know when or how we are going to leave this earth. I am sadden to see your face on these pages and to read of your families lost but I know of heavens gain. However, forever peace and eternal rest my sister.
Detective/Corporal
RMPD Rocky Mount, NC
My deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of P.O. Sheila Patrick-Herring. I had the joy of being trained by Sheila in the Detroit Police Academy (94G). During that time Sheila inspired me to develop a love for duty, that although I no longer share, still thrives inside me to this day. Sheila was the epitome of what a "female" officer should be, contrary to public opinion. I know she's out there running telling someone to "GET UP HERE!!" We'll miss you girl!!
To her oldest daughter, keep moving forward as your mother would want you to.
Shontae Jennings, Former P.O.
Detroit Police Department
God has a special place for police officers...it's in heaven with the rest of the angels.
God bless your family and friends.

Even as the days pass, the loss of a fellow sister in blue does not get easier. Each day is filled with the "what could have beens" and every drive past the bar where you were slain mkaes me reflect on your family. During this week, National Police Officer Memorial Week, seeing your picture on the news, hearing the 911 tapes from that night bring open the wound so deep again. Your sacrifice will never be forgotten nor will we ever stop praying for the wonderful family you left behind. For the brief time you were with us, you brought us laughter and brightened each day with your smile. As I walk out the doors to work the street at night, your picutre is one of the last things I see and how blessed I feel to have you watching over me.

The first thing I noticed about you when I met you was your infectious smile. Anyone who knew you would agree that you are and will always be an amazing and beautiful person and friend. I am very thankful to have known you and to have shared as much as I did with you. You weren't just a co-worker and an officer you were my friend. You have left your footprints and smile on my heart and that is how I remember you my friend. I know Heaven was waiting for you with open arms and so is your daughter who was waiting for you as well. You are missed dearly and always loved from your friends here at the Norfolk Airport. We were blessed to have you as part of our family.

Please remember the fallen officers we have lost. Remember the men and women who died trying to make this world a safer and better place for us all to live in. Thank you Officer Herring for a job well done. Please continue to watch over us and protect us as only you can. You will forever be at our side and in our hearts.
For those of you who still have loved ones with us please take the time to tell them how much you appreciate and care about them.
IF I KNEW
If I knew it would be the last time
That I'd see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in more tightly
and pray the Lord, your soul to keep.
If I knew it would be the last time
that I see you walk out the door,
I would give you a hug and kiss
and call you back for one more.
If I knew it would be the last time
I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise,
I would video tape each action and word,
so I could play them back day after day.
If I knew it would be the last time,
I could spare an extra minute
to stop and say "I love you,"
instead of assuming you would KNOW I do.
If I knew it would be the last time
I would be there to share your day,
Well I'm sure you'll have so many more,
so I can let just this one slip away.
For surely there's always tomorrow
to make up for an oversight,
and we always get a second chance
to make everything just right.
There will always be another day
to say "I love you,"
And certainly there's another chance
to say our "Anything I can do?"
But just in case I might be wrong,
and today is all I get,
I'd like to say how much I love you
and I hope we never forget.
Tomorrow is not promised to anyone,
young or old alike,
And today may be the last chance
you get to hold your loved one tight.
So if you're waiting for tomorrow,
why not do it today?
For if tomorrow never comes,
you'll surely regret the day,
That you didn't take that extra time
for a smile, a hug, or a kiss
and you were too busy to grant someone,
what turned out to be their one last wish.
So hold your loved ones close today,
and whisper in their ear,
Tell them how much you love them
and that you'll always hold them dear
Take time to say "I'm sorry,"
"Please forgive me," "Thank you," or "It's okay."
And if tomorrow never comes,
you'll have no regrets about today.

I'd like to offer my deepest condolences to the Herring family. I cannot imagine the pain and heartache that you are all experiencing. I did not know Officer Herring, though she was a police officer just as I am, everday we all take the ultimate risk of not coming home, we love our job, there is nothing else that we can see ourselves doing. I pray that somehow, someway another name is not added to this painfully long list of the fallen men and women in blue.
