Reflections for Deputy Sheriff George Monroe Selby
May you find peace in the fact that he died doing what was his passion. Taking bad guys off the streets and making the world a safer place. My heart grieves for you, his wife, and your children. I hope you can feel his presence in tough times ahead. All of us in the law enforcement community will be praying for you and your family.
There is a destiny that makes us brothers
None go his way alone
All that we send into the lives of others,
Comes back into our own....Thank you Deputy Selby for your sacrifice and please tell Billy hello.Isaiah 40:31

To the George's family I understand your pain and the long road that is ahead. In 1996 my family experienced our line of duty death when my Aunt (Sherry H. Goodman) was murdered. The only advice i can offer is to keep your family strong and to lean on one another. I unfortunately tried to heal on my own and it failed me. You will survive as have many others but take comfort in what i always tell my family. I am doing what makes me happy and I know that Geaorge was just as happy. He was with his brothers going forward and attacking the evil in our world that so many others are afraid of.
To George's team I know you did all you could. We know George loved and trusted you and that is a bond non police can't understand. Also to our sister agency (Memphis P.D.) I thank all that assisted us in a tragic scene, it proves that we are all brothers and sisters.
sincerely and regretfully,

May God wrap his loving arms around your family & friends as they begin the difficult journey facing them. Lord, please give them comfort & strength. It's a terribly hard & at times lonely road......I've been there too. I'll keep you in my prayers.

I am terribly saddened to learn of another Shelby County Deputy Sheriff losing his life in the line of duty. I am from Shelby County originally and still call it home. It still seems like yesterday that Sherry Goodman and Rupert Peete were killed. My heart goes out to the family, friends, and coworkers of Deputy Selby. May God bless them all through this very difficult time, and watch over the other members of the Sheriff's Office who protect the people of Shelby County.

I want to express my deepest and most sincere sympathy to the family, friends and co-workers of Deputy Selby. I have been told he was a WONDERFUL person and an OUTSTANDING officer. I sit here with tears in my eyes and heavy heart. I want to express how much this has affected me, personally. I work in this business everyday. My husband works in the Patrol Division at Shelby County. Neither of us knew Deputy Selby, but we have cried for him for hours. I am just sorry that we did not get a chance to know him. I know words don't ease the pain, but I am sure of one thing...there is a beautiful new Angel in Heaven. He is there with you, always!! Again, I am deeply sorry for your loss.

THE POLICEMAN’S LAST ROLL CALL ...
THE POLICEMAN STOOD AND FACED HIS GOD, WHICH MUST ALWAYS COME TO PASS. HE HOPED HIS SHOES WERE SHINING, JUST AS BRIGHTLY AS HIS BRASS. "STEP FORWARD NOW, POLICEMAN. HOW SHALL I DEAL WITH YOU? HAVE YOU ALWAYS TURNED THE OTHER CHEEK? TO MY CHURCH HAVE YOU BEEN TRUE?"
THE POLICEMAN SQUARED his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain’t. Because those of us who carry badges can’t always be a Saint. I’ve had to work most Sundays, and at times my talk was rough, and sometimes I’ve been violent because the streets are awfully tough. But I never took a penny that wasn’t mine to keep, though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills just got to steep. And I never passed a cry for help, though times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I’ve wept many unmanly tears. I know I don’t deserve a place among the people here, they never wanted me around except to calm their fear. If you’ve a place for me Lord, it needn’t be so grand. I never expected or had too much, but if you don’t, I’ll understand."
There was silence all around the throne where the Saints had often trod. As the policeman waited quietly, for the judgement of his God. "Step forward now, policeman, you’ve borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat on Heaven’s streets, you’ve done your time in hell."

"This is my shield.
I bear it before me into battle,
but it is not mine alone.
It protects my brother on my left.
It protects my city.
I will never let my brother
out of its shadow
nor my city out of its shelter.
I will die with my shield before me
facing the enemy."
