Reflections for Deputy Sheriff David Alan Powell
Dave, You were a brother by badge and a friend. Like everyone who knew you, I will miss you. I will miss your smile, your distinguishable laugh, and your physical presence. I know you are watching over all of us now in a place where no harm can come to you. God bless you, your family, and friends. I will not forget you. Your Partner and friend, Deputy Gregory S. THE POLICEMAN’S LAST ROLL CALL ...
THE POLICEMAN STOOD AND FACED HIS GOD, WHICH MUST ALWAYS COME TO PASS. HE HOPED HIS SHOES WERE SHINING, JUST AS BRIGHTLY AS HIS BRASS. "STEP FORWARD NOW, POLICEMAN. HOW SHALL I DEAL WITH YOU? HAVE YOU ALWAYS TURNED THE OTHER CHEEK? TO MY CHURCH HAVE YOU BEEN TRUE?"
THE POLICEMAN SQUARED his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain’t. Because those of us who carry badges can’t always be a Saint. I’ve had to work most Sundays, and at times my talk was rough, and sometimes I’ve been violent because the streets are awfully tough. But I never took a penny that wasn’t mine to keep, though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills just got to steep. And I never passed a cry for help, though times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I’ve wept many unmanly tears. I know I don’t deserve a place among the people here, they never wanted me around except to calm their fear. If you’ve a place for me Lord, it needn’t be so grand. I never expected or had too much, but if you don’t, I’ll understand."
There was silence all around the throne where the Saints had often trod. As the policeman waited quietly, for the judgement of his God. "Step forward now, policeman, you’ve borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat on Heaven’s streets, you’ve done your time in hell."

David I didn't know you, but my best friend, Deputy Mark Smith, LASD did. David is a hero, and so is his family for having to go through this hell. Even though I didn't know David, I have nothing but the highest respect for him, and I want to say thanks for laying down your life for people, many of which don't appreciate it. God bless you David and when you meet St. Michael. the patron Saint of Police Officers, in heaven he will no doubt put his hand on your shoulder and say, "good job, you did the best you could."
Deputy Steven Ungles, Retired
Solano County, CA Sheriff's Office
We lost another Hero today...the words all of us hate to hear, yet know that the harsh reality of it is all to clear. It takes us by shock and disbelief. We want so badly to hope that the news can't be true, but in the end we all know the finality of it all.
To those of us that knew Dave, we can say "I knew him when". We worked along side of him going to "routine calls" as if there is such a thing, and handling calls ourselves and having peace the peace of mind seeing him backing me up on traffic stops and other calls. I always knew it was Dave...he had that "cat that just swallowed the canary" grin, and was the only guy I knew always 10-8 with his riot gear helmet hanging from the cage looking like he had a partner in the car wtih him.
Today we got a blinsided punch in the gut. Our job is dangerous and good people get killed. You do this kind of dirty work long enough and one thing is for sure, you WILL lose somebody close.
Now, each of us will take a step back from this punch we just took, and in our own way we will handle the pain. We will wear our Black Bands and lay his body to rest. His job here on earth now completed.
As time will progress and this sad November day drifts slowly behind us, do not become complacent nor ever forget the terrible price that Deputy Dave Powell and so many others before him have paid. Rest in peace dear brother.
God Bless Dave's Family and may the Lord watch over us all.

Bless the peacekeepers that try to keep our world safe. I did not know Deputy Sheriff David A. Powell, however I do work a police department and know how a loss of a brother in blue can feel like. Our department lost a peacekeeper just last month and he, just like Deputy Powell, will be missed. Never forget the memories you shared with him and your other brothers and sisters in blue. I would like to say, if you have something to say to someone, please tell them right then and there, for you don't know if this is the last time you will see them. Our department learned the hard way, and we will never forget to tell our extended family how we feel and thoughts about each other. I hope this never happens again, but as long as there are criminals out in the world, this will happen. I am a daughter of a police officer, the wife of a fireman, sister of a fireman (who wants to be a state trooper) and I myself work in the police department. I will forever be greatful for the brothers and sisters in blue that protect my family and let them come home at night. Thank everyone out there that is in public saftey, and god bless you.
To the family of Deputy Powell, Keep him in your heart and he is now watching over you.
To the police department that lost a brother, Remember he is now watching over you and your brothers and sisters in blue. Remember his smile, his presence, and his love for his family and police department.

I was shocked and saddened to hear about David's death. When the LASD had patrol duties in Long Beach, CA, a few years ago I saw David on the Eastside of the city when he was working patrol next to my agency. My thoughts and prayers are with the Powell family and the deputies of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department over this tragic loss of Deputy Sheriff David Powell. May our brother David rest in peace. May God bless the Powell family. David died a hero and will always be remembered as one. Never forget the fallen hero!

Almost every day I check the Officer Down web page hoping not to see anymore names added to it, but I know as long as there are people out there like the one that took the life of Deputy Powell this site will always have names on it. To the family and friends of Deputy Powell I offer my heart felt sympathy on your loss and know that Deputy Powell is watching over us from on high, his tour of duty is now over and he is patrolling the streets of heaven.

A few years ago when I began to seriously consider going into law enforcement, I rode with Dep. Powell as a civilian observer. I saw that he truely enjoyed his job and that he was a professional in everything he did. He showed me some of the ins and outs of law enforcement and the experiences I had that day confirmed why I wanted to go into law enforcement. Now, I wear the same uniform he did. Unfortunately I will never get a chance to ride in a radio car with him again. My prayers go to you and your family, God bless.
