Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Jeffrey Dean Jones

He was the first to check on and the last to check off, and he had a big grin on his face the whole shift. Jeff always, without exception, was a friend of man. He never cared for money, glory, or fame; all he wanted was to help others any way he could. No memorial assembled with the weak words of mortals could ever pay him tribute, I only hope that others who read this will pass on his memory by befriending someone in need. He has mounted with the wings of eagles and touched the face of GOD

I originally met Jeff at church where he served as a Deacon. He shared with me his desire to get into Law Enforcement. I encouraged him to pursue it if he felt that's where the Lord would have him. I then taught Jeff in 'rookie' school and watched him gain employment with the Pender County Sheriff Office. Even with changes in church membership, Jeff and I kept in touch; even stopping along the roadside to discuss law enforcement. Jeff informed me in early 2000 that he may run for Sheriff of Pender County; again, I encouraged him to pursue it if he felt that's where the Lord would have him. Although he lost in the Primary, Jeff was not discouraged. He was proud of his Department and enjoyed serving the citizens of Pender County. I received a call at approximately 0130 hours, a few hours after the accident, informing me that Jeff had been killed. My first response was 'he's in Heaven'. Jeff is missed by his family and friends; however, Heaven is Sweeter with him there. May God Bless.

All that I have heard about this young man has been good. I personally would like to extend to all who are affected by this loss, a prayer of comfort and strength, and peace beyond all understanding. May God give you the strength to look forward and press on each day and help you in your times of sadness and remember that God said, "BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD" ...for what we don't understand and can't comprehend, learn to lean on Jesus. He'll never leave you or forsake you and He will meet you where you are at in your life, for comfort, for peace, for guidance and love. You're not alone. Peace be with all who reads this and find your strength in God. He'll help you through this sad sad time. Love in Christ M. Waldon Wilmington NC

It was only a year ago to the date that I attended my first Law Enforcement Funeral after having served 20 yrs with the Wilmington Police Department in NC when I heard about his tragic accident. I had hoped that would be my last one. But since then, I have gone to 2 more, including visitation at Jeff's. I started my Law Enforcement career in Pender County, and everyone, and I mean, every one in that county beleives in each other, thier fellow citizens, their Department, and everyone who has ever worked in Law Enforcement. I know Jeff would agree with me. He dedicated his life to his community, his family and GOD. As I attended his wake, I could tell this. I sit here remembering the faces of those who I worked with and the tears in their eyes, it makes me know we are so human and life can be taken away from us in a split second. What I would like to say the most, is, and this is from my heart, Jeff, thank-you for doing your duty, we will never forget you. Your tour of duty is over here, and we will follow in your steps. I know you are "patroling" the halls of heaven and your eyes are watching down on us. May GOD bless you, your Department, and your family.

Having known Jeff for over 15 years, I can honestly say he is one of the few who got into Law Enforcement to actually make a difference. Jeff loved donning the uniform each and every time. He was a man of his word, and the sacrifices he gave to this community will never be forgotten. A man of Christian faith and Christian values, Jeff always gave his all doing what he loved. Jeff, I know your looking at me while I type this. The impact you made on our lives, whether it be professional or personal life, will stay with us. You always knew when we needed encouragement, or a kind word. I value the time I had with you my friend, and our department can never fill the void you left. We were truly blessed to have you on our side; the shoulder you provided us is gone, but the thoughts and memories we have remain. We love you Jeffrey Dean Jones.

Having recently lost a fellow officer in an automobile accident, my heart goes out to Officer down and his family. To meet this fate in service to others, to me, there is no higher sacrifice. May his fellow officers and friends remeber him well. My prayers are with you.

It saddens me to see another name added to this list of fallen heroes. May the family, friends and brothers in blue find solace with each other at this time. He is now keeping watch from above.

Just another example of the thin blue line getting thinner, and how another officer sacrifices his own life for the sake of others. He made the decision to swerve, costing him his own life. My condolences to his agency, family, and friends.
