Browsing through the ODMP site I came across your memorial page. The circumstances surrounding your death - the taunting and harassment you had to deal with - it all makes me sick. I am so sorry to read that this has happened to you. God's peace be with you and your family. You made the extreme sacrifice - a true hero and one that never will be forgotten. God rest your soul, Detective.

To the family of Det. Newman,
I too am a survivor of a fallen officer. My dad died ILOD on April 17th, 2003. I never had the opportunity to meet Det. Newman but I know that he is a true hero. I remember hearing the story about what had happened to him from my dad and I was sickened. I always made it a point to ask my dad who was the officer that he was wearing the dreaded black band for. He would tell me and I would say a prayer for that officer and their families. I never imagined that the dreaded black band would one day be worn for my father. When the police came to my home and told me that my dad had died at work, my nightmare had come true. My dad was a 36 year veteran that would never retire. I guess GOD made that decision for him. I am glad that the waste of life cowards who did this to Det. Newman are going to pay for the life they stole. When they buried my dad, he had an In Memory Of pin on his dress uniform under his badge with Det. Thomas Newman's name inscribed. I can only pray that there won't be someone wearing an In Memory Of pin with my dad's name on it. I guess that now my dad and Det. Newman are up in heaven swapping stories with the many heroes that they worn the black bands for in the past. They are now guarding God's golden throne. Rest peacefully Blue Heroes.

It's been 7 months since Detective Newman's death, and I hope his family and friends are doing well. The circumstances he was in reminds me of when I have been approached by suspicious people late at night while I was minding my own business and doing nothing wrong. It really angers me to know that this is what happened to Det. Newman for being one of the few people who stand up to these animals who prey on others. Thank you for your sacrifice, and I hope that I will be able to someday serve with courage the way you did. He certainly must be at peace in heaven.

How sad to learn of this senseless death. I was Tom's classmate in Baltimore Police Departments Academy Class 90-4. He was the quiet one, the "Stealth Officer" as I had called him. A super nice guy of few words. I left the BPD in 1995 but have always kept up on the happenings there. I was friends with Harold Carey and worked with him in Central. It breaks my heart.

As I read all these reflections one stuck out at me. The one that a deputy wrote from Dane Co. Sheriff's Department in WI. "It makes me sick to my stomach to see people attacking police officers while there back is turned. It makes me wonder what kind of a world we live in." Well Deputy. I couldn't agree with you more! I am very proud to know that I will be entering the force to work side by side with officers like Thomas Newman. All of you Dep.s are great people who keep this world stitched together. Be safe out there guys!

My condolences to the fallen officer. My wife and I were visiting Baltimore when he was shot the first time. We were horrified by that attack.

To the officer's partners: Do not stop, continue to fight! Police officers may be only people who understand our job.

I am greatly bothered. You are and will always be a wonderful officer, Det Newman. You did what any of us would do in the line of duty. What upsets me is the disregard people are having for law enforcement. Your death has reached far and wide, and more personal to people then you would ever want. Walk the streets of Heaven proudly, you have taught us all well.

Today I went to my friend's Funeral
I've never felt pain like this before.
The senseless act from that cowards that too you too soon.

I remember when my friend's daughter was born.
Two days after her birth I saw him, he was glowing.
With a big grin on his face, he told me he was a father again.

My friend's daughter is 3 now, and what a wonderful girl she is
My Friend won't see his daughter Mature
Nor will she see her father again.

You see, my friend was shot and killed,
Killed for doing a job he loved so much
Killed by Cowards on the street.

My friend is at peace now
Leaving everyone and me to grieve.
Not remembering the bad, but always remembering the fun.

We will miss you Tommy,
Rest In Peace my Friend
You will be sorely missed.

I was absolutely sickened when I read the account of Detective Newman's cold-blooded murder. It just goes to show that officers are truly never off duty. May you rest in peace, Detective.

Words cannot express the fellings and emotions that were running through my body as i read this horrible story. Those scumbags took the life of a dedicated Police Officer, and a devoted Father. My deepest sympathy to those precious children, and condolences to the Baltimore City Police Department in the senseless slaying of a commrade.
