Reflections for Police Officer James A. Shields
Jim it's true life does go on, but one can plainly see that everyday in this station house of ours is not the same since you were unjustly taken from us all, your family and your friends. Your memory will live on forever and beyond for those of us who knew you well. Both you and your family will forever be in my thoughts as well as in my prayers. Your friend for eternity.

I am a native Western New Yorker. I was in a police academy in another part of the state, when this terrible tragedy took place. I felt so bad to hear the news. It's a bigger shame that, in this present time, police officers are usually shown more respect and honors, after they are gone. Ironically, they are treated like "criminals" when they're here with us.
Rest in Peace.... and God Bless your soul.

Jim,
You died exactly one year ago tonight. As your Family,Friends, and Co-Workers gather tonight at the spot where you died, I am certain that each remebers you with the fondness and love you so deeply deserve.
Though we ride in one man cars now,i'm sure that from time to time you acompany each of us on a tour of duty and provide us with a little "spirtual" back-up.
Thanks Jim!

To everyone who reads this, just a reminder of who he is in my heart. He was the son who could joke and play with his parents as well as he vould his friends. He is the little brother to some and the big brother to one. He is the father of 2 who now watches their sporting events and music concerts from a different seat in the house. A PO that was once told " you are the nicest cop who ever arrested me" I choose to remember my brother as if we were still kids, In the snowey winters of Buffalo, building snow tunnels and coming out safely, never thought anything could ever happen to us. We grew up and the worst happened. I love you dear brother and always will. Watch over us and keep us safe as only a family angel can. See you again someday.

I don't know if Jimmy is the original author of the passage below, but ironically he sent his to about a dozen friends (co-workers) and family the day he died. My husband, one of Jimmy's cousins was one of them. As our troops are in Iraq it seems as timely as ever.
Looking back,
it's hard to believe that we have lived as long as we have.
As children we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags. Riding in the back of a pickup truck on a warm day was always a special treat.
Our baby cribs were painted with bright colored lead based paint. We often chewed on the crib, ingesting the paint.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors, or cabinets, and when we rode our bikes we had no helmets.
We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then rode down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times we learned to solve the problem.
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day.
We played dodgeball and sometimes the ball would really hurt.
We ate cupcakes, bread and butter, and drank sugar soda, but we were never overweight; we were always outside playing.
Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.
That generation produced some of the greatest risk-takers and problem solvers. We had the freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all!!!

THE POLICEMAN'S LAST ROLL CALL...
THE POLICEMAN STOOD AND FACED HIS GOD, WHICH MUST ALWAYS COME TO PASS. HE HOPED HIS SHOES WERE SHINING, JUST AS BRIGHTLY AS HIS BRASS. "STEP FORWARD NOW, POLICEMAN. HOW SHALL I DEAL WITH YOU? HAVE YOU ALWAYS TURNED THE OTHER CHEEK? TO MY CHURCH HAVE YOU BEEN TRUE?"
THE POLICEMAN SQUARED his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't. Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a Saint. I've had to work most Sundays, and at times my talk was rough, and sometimes I've been violent because the streets are awfully tough. But I never took a penny that wasn't mine to keep, though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills just got to steep. And I never passed a cry for help, though times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept many unmanly tears. I know I don't deserve a place among the people here, they never wanted me around except to calm their fear. If you've a place for me Lord, it needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much, but if you don't, I'll understand."
There was silence all around the throne where the Saints had often trod. As the policeman waited quietly, for the judgement of his God. "Step forward now, policeman, you've borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets, you've done your time in hell."

i would like everyone who reads this entry to know the kind of officer jimmy was. he was the one who would give you the shirt off his back and the one that left no stone unturned even to the end. he would root the loudest at the games and always had a great time. he will never be forgotten and the short time we had with him on the job will always be valued greatly. he is and always will be sorely missed. may god always be with his family and children. your dedication to duty is something i hope i can live up to. see ya later buddy.

Jim Shields was a wonderful person. We graduated from high school together. He had the right temperament to be a police officer--honest, brave, and a great heart.
My thoughts and prayers are with his mother and his father Charlie, who is a retired a police officer in neighboring Cheektowaga, NY.
