Reflections for Police Officer Beryl Wayne Scott, Jr.
To the family and friends of Officer Wayne Scott:
Wayne was one of my DRE Instructors when I recently went through the class. He was very dedicated to his job, family, and his friends. I will always remember sitting with him at the last instructor school and listening to his amazement at a newspaper article about the guy who had the longest drive at the golf course. Hw was truly in awe at the feats of this individual. I will always miss Wayne and be forever grateful for the knowledge he passed on to me and to all the DRE's he instructed.
May you rest in peace my Brother and watch over us from heaven and you will always be our silent partner.

Wayne taught me in numerous classes over the years, we worked together during several classes on the DRE program. The majority of the knowledge that I have in DRE and HGN came from Wayne. His memory and knowledge will be passed onto the new recruits that I teach. I have thought over the last few days that we have lost a true hero on September 10th, but now I see that you will live on forever in the knowledge you passed on.
I was a motor for many years and the most exciting part of my career was when they handed me my motor pin. Each pin is that of a motorcyle with wings to the side. These are the wings of angels to protect us, you are now are wings Scott and you will continue to protect and serve your brothers forever. Until we ride together again, we love you Wayne and thank you for your sacrifice.

My prayers and thoughts are with Wayne's family, friends and co-workers. As the Region I Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) Coordinator, I had the opportunity to discuss various DRE issues with Wayne and always found him to be extremely dedicated towards the cause of removing drug-impaired drivers from our roadways. The week prior to his death, Wayne attended a meeting of State DRE Coordinators held in New Mexico. His excitement and support of the program was very obvious and it was a pleasure to have him involved in the meeting. We will miss Wayne and he will always have a place in our hearts and in our efforts in DRE.

As a motorcycle enthusiast and a forever strong supporter of the protectors of our community, I am always giving the strongest "thumbs up" to any motor officer whenever I pass them on the road. Just the day before this tragic event, I pulled up next to a Phoenix Police Officer on his motorcycle and told him he had one of the greatest jobs in the world! He smiled big, nodded in agreement and just before we pulled out from our stop I reminded him to always ride safe but ride strong. He replied, "We will." Thank you, Officer Wayne Scott, for your dedicated and earnest service to the citizens of Phoenix. You will be sorely missed and remembered. To Mrs. Scott . . . please know that there are many people like me in this community who offer our sincere condolences and prayers of support and strength for your future. God be with you.

Please know that the loss of another motor officer ripples across the continent and is felt by those far away. Despite the miles that separate us, others feel your loss and send to you our deepest sympathies and condolences.
ITS SOUNDS LIKE THUNDER FAR AWAY..........
It sounds like thunder far away, but the skies are blue and bright...
And soon they crest the hill nearby, and ride into our sight.
They shake the ground with powerful sound, and they make some hearts beat fast...
They look so proud and noble, like Knights come from the past.
Side by side, they always ride, and seem to move as one...
From early in the morning light, to the setting of the sun.
And children point and wave to them, from cars that pass them by...
And young ones ask their parents, why the men have mirrors for eyes.
They ride the roads, and fight for good, and defend small ones like you...
They ask to ride, and do with pride, and sometimes they are few.
Like men of steel, on Silver Wings, they sparkle in the light...
then with a roar and rumble, they ride out of our sight.
Sometimes when one has fallen, never to ride again...
You can hear the others calling, like thunder on the wind.
Side by side, they slowly ride, and their thunder is a mournful sound...
And the mirrors hide their eyes from us, when teardrops fall to ground.
So if you see one riding, and you look into his face...
You see your reflection in his eyes, you know that you are safe.
For motormen are a special breed, they love to ride the wind...
And when you hear the thunder boom, the fallen ones ride again.

I am saddened to hear fo the death of Officer Scott. I lost a cousin in King County WASH, he was struck by a city bus on his motor just after finishing training. I wish the best to all his brother and sister officers in Phoenix. I pray for his unborn child and the family he left behind. On September 10, 2002 a tragedy occurred. The Phoenix Police Department lost a dedicated employee, a family lost a vital member,a wife lost a husband, an unborn child lost a father, and I along with a lot of other people lost a friend and colleague. I can say that I had the honor of knowing, working with, and learning from Wayne, which I will cherish. Wayne was the guy that would do anything for you and give you the shirt off his back if you needed it.
He was always there to give advise and truly enjoyed his career. For those who knew Wayne I am sure will agree with me and for those who did not, I am sorry that you did not have the chance to know Wayne because I am sure that he would have left a positive and lasting impression on you. Although this was a sad day I know that Wayne passed while he was doing what he liked to do best and that was providing a service to our community by being a Phoenix Police Department Motorcycle Officer. The only positive outcome to this is that Heaven has gained a new angel to watch over the rest of us. Thank you Wayne for everything, you will always be remebered. Rest in peace my brother in blue.
