"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

charlie, not a day goes by that i dont think of you.. i really miss having you around. i miss my big brother, but i am very proud of you. i didn't know that this web site existed until a few weeks ago when mom sent it to me. when i seen your name on here it made me think back on the day when i came home from school and daddy was sitting outside the bus stop waiting for me to get off the bus so he can tell me that you was killed in an automobile accident i can't explain to you the feeling that i had. i know that god had plans for you and this was one of them. we will never understand why such a great person like you had to end your life so short but you know the man upstairs doesn't do things that we cant handle. i really miss you... i have sat here and read all of your reflections that people have written about you and i am very proud should i say to have you as a brother because you have left a great impression on all of these people and they really appreciated you as not only a person but a great friend. i just want you to know that i LOVE you and i will never forget you. you are always in my heart........
LOVE YOUR SISTER

One more thing, I finally got the chance to go to New Orleans, and you were right, there's no place like it. Infact, I ended up marrying somebody I met there. So, I should thank you, if it weren't for you I may have never had any interest in LA, and would have never met my husband. I knew you were a great friend!! I miss and love you.

Hey Charles,
I used to have so much fun talking to you, or rather, you giving me a hard time when I would be talking to David. You were such a good friend to him, and you are missed so much. You had one of the greatest personalities, you always made me laugh. I know that one day we'll all get together again. I just can't believe it's already been 9 years. I will never forget you.

I still clearly remember the day I received a phone call while I was stationed at Bolling Air Force Base Wash D.C. from a friend at Al-Jaber saying Chuck and David crashed their Hummer and passed away. I was so hurt by this news. I had just left Al-Jaber in late Sept.98, and was very close with both Chuck and Dave. I remember working long, hot 12-14 hour days with these two heroes on the base and at the Kuwait City Air Port. I will never forget all the fun we had. Chuck and I along with other soldiers became very close, we played basketball, volleyball, boxed, lifted weights and had a great time. He was a great athlete, and a wonderful friend. I only knew Chuck and Dave for 4-months of my life, however I will never forget them till the day I die. I miss (You's) both very much (that's Jersey slang) they would get it. And God Bless your Family and Friends.

I was the permanent duty First Sergeant assigned to Al Jaber the day Airmen Campbell and Schroeder passed away. It was a very difficult day and even weeks that followed. To lose not just one but two troopers in one day is devestating. They put themselves in harms way and paid the ultimate price so we could be free. That must never be forgotten. God Bless his family and friends.

I was deployed to Al Jaber Air Base when this tragedy happened. It was a very sad day and one that those of us who were there will never forget. Airman Schroeder and Airman Campbell answered the call of duty and selflessly went into in harms way. They left the comforts of home and traveled to a far away land to preserve our precious freedom. It is because of them and others like them that we live in such a great country. I think of them from time to time and always will. God Bless Them.
