Reflections for Police Officer Melissa Jayne Schmidt
Hi Melissa!
It's been awhile since I posted anything here - but that does not mean I have not thought about you.
Tomorrow is the start on National Police Week (May 9-15). Every year during this week, I reflect on the great times we had in the Bahamas and Havana, Cuba as Marines! We had some super times that I will always cherish! You would always kick my tail all over the basketball court. You were one heck of a basketball player as well a Marine!
My thoughts and prayers are always with you and your family.

Today, April 18th, is your birthday. I think of you every day but this day is special. Keep watching over us, and give me a nudge occasionally to guide me the right way. You will always be my one and only hero, Melissa. Love you.

Just reading the last reflection leaves me to wonder how many other people. that you've met in your adventures, don't know that you've been taken from us. Wish we knew how to contact them. But....you're still with us..always in our hearts and minds. Especially today..on your birthday. I often feel your presence and talk to you all the time..as you well know.. and are probably laughing your head off about that!!
Happy Birthday in heaven honey...LOVE TO YOU ETERNITY.

Melissa, Its been a long time since we served together in Iwakuni,Japan. I just found out that you are now watching over us. You were always one of my favorites. You always made me laugh, when people would ask why you left law enforcement to join the Marine Corps, and your answer was that you needed a vacation. I will always cherish our friendship and the memories that we had at Crash Fire Rescue. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers. Semper Fi, CPL. Troy Teegarden

Its Christmas Eve and we'll be thinking of you and missing you as always. You're always in our thoughts, every day, but even more so on special days. We'll remember happier past holidays when you were with us. Those memories can still make us smile. You're always with us in our hearts and spirit.

The family was here on the 18th to remember you on your birthday...42 years! It was 6 years 9 months and 18 days since you were taken from us. We talk about you often, as you well know,....and smile when we remember all the good times and are sad to know there can't be any new memories of you. The old ones still keep us going...and you're still our inspiration! Some of your PD friends are still in contact and we always have memories to share. You're always in our hearts and minds....Love to to eternity!

Dearest Melissa,
Another year is about to end. It's been 6 1/2 years since you've been gone and we've missed you every single day of those years. The whole family was together for Christmas and you were thought of often...and very much missed. I know you were with us in spirit as you always are. I often feel your presence and it gives me comfort.
Love you to eternity........

Not a days goes by that I don't think of you. It's been too long since I have been to see you. Things are kind of a mess for me, but I will get there before the snow flies if I have to travel alone. I miss you buddy.

Today I and remembering Melissa, our Uptown Minneapolis block cop, who we loved and admired so much. I think about her often, and her consistently solid and quiet approach. I didn't know her well, but once a month she and her partner came to my house and talked for an hour or two
to the neighborhood group. She had a spirit about her that was authentic and true blue. She always noticed my cats, was just as concerned about them as the humans in the room. She really made a mark with her life. I won't forget her.
My heart goes out to her family and
friends, especially today.

Thinking of you and all of your loved ones today. I know that to some it seems like yesterday that you were called away and yet to others if has felt like an eternity since they saw your smile, heard your voice or were able to hug you. Continue to watch over all of them. You are a true hero and have not been forgotten.

On the 6th anniversary of Officer Schmidt’s death, we honored her service during roll call by reading her entry from ODMP. Each day, we honor one fallen officer on the anniversary of their death so as to keep them in our thoughts, and also to remind us of the dangers inherent in our job.
Officer Schmidt is gone, but not forgotten.

Dear Melissa,
This will be our 6th Christmas without you and we'll be missing you as much as that first one in '02. Holidays just aren't the same. We always had such a good time, now we have only memories, which we treasure. I'm sure you'll be with us in spirit...I often feel your presence and its a comfort.
We have our blue lights up for you and all police officers who put their lives on the line everyday. We pray for their safety.
Continue watching over us all.. family, friends and fellow officers. You'll be in our hearts forever.

My thoughts are with all of your loved ones as Christmas approaches. I know each day is a challenge for everyone who loves and misses you and those feelings become even strong during the holidays for they miss your smile, voice and warm touch. They will keep you alive with the many warm memories they have of you from Christmas' past. I have decorated the outside of my home in all blue lights, one of those lights has been assigned to you as my way of thanking you for your service to law enforcement and to let you know you have not been forgotten.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.
