Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Shane Ronald Bennett
Happy Father's Day
Anonymous
Shane lived and died a true hero.
I remember Shane from the first day he hired on with the Sheriff's Department. He and I sat in the admin office at 1301 bright-eyed and eager...waiting to see what floor we would be assigned to. Then we were off to jail school and the police academy...
Honor. Duty. Pride. Esteem. Class #113
I never once thought for a moment that I would lose such a friend in the years to come.
He and I later went to the Field Training Officer and Instructor Development schools together. I remember when he gave his lecture on methamphetamine labs. I sat in awe listening to him...so knowledgeable...he was trying to make a difference in the area he patrolled.
I never thought for a moment that I would lose such a friend in the years to come.
I can't describe the feelings I had when the call came over the radio and dispatch advised that District 2 had an assist and an officer was down. I couldn't get there fast enough...hoping and praying that it was all just a nightmare.
I never once thought for a moment that I would lose such a friend in the years to come.
Shane gave the ultimate sacrifice. To the friends and family...be proud in this time of grief. He truly loved his job and made a difference. He was a good man and loved his family. He would do anything for a fellow officer. I only wish that I could be a fraction of the kind of person he was.
So long for a while, Shane. I'll meet you one day in Heaven. Save a night shift slot for me. I will miss you dearly.

Let me start out saying that Shane was an outstanding officer. I knew him since the age of 14, my father worked with him in district two for a while. Now at the age of 21 I am in law enforcement also, reserve for the sheriffs department until I can apply for full time, and not only does this hit me personally from knowing Shane but it is coming from both sides now because he was also one of my brothers-in-law. I want to express my deep regrets to the family for losing such a outstanding man and to the Department for losing an outstanding officer. Shane will live on in our hearts and minds and I for one will always remember and speak of Shane as a wonderful, caring person.

I feel a great honor in knowing that I had the chance to work along side Shane. He was always ready to help if you needed it and never turned you down. I never saw him without a smile even at the end of a tough shift. No matter the situation he was ready to jump in and do a good job. God has taken a good man from us and must have bigger plans for him. Now instead of watching out for us, he's watching over us and I couldn't think of a better person for the job. We're gonna miss you Shane, God Bless You

If I had a son, I would want him to be just as Shane was - honest and true, a man devoted to his family, and dedicated to helping others.
Shane was a hero, not just for how he died, but because of how he lived.
He will be deeply missed by all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

To Officer Bennett's family: We want you to know that others grieve with you at this time. We have walked in your shoes and it is a devastating time. It's a time of unbelief, a time when your world is turned upside down, a time when things will never be the same. It's a time to hang on to your faith and trust in God. One day everything will be made right.
God bless and take care of you.

After the events of 9-11-01 I stopped looking at the ODMP. I figured that I had seen and suffered enough loss and pain to last a lifetime. A good friend of mine and my family was killed in those attacks. My friend was a member of FDNY and lost his life in tower 2 of the WTC. On 061202, 9 months after the attacks I was reminded that we were not the only ones suffering from loss. A friend of mine sat and talked with me about what I was feeling. The words I remember the most from my friend were "This will never be easy to deal with, but it will get easier." She also reminded me that my friend will forever live in my heart and soul.
She was right, things arent easy but they are getting easier . I hope that these words provide some comfort to the family, friends and co-workers of Deputy Bennett.
I guess the reason I posted this on Deputy Bennett's page was because my friend shares the same name althought there is no relation.
God bless and keep you....

Words cannot express the sadness I feel for you Theresa, your daughter and family. My parents lived next door to the incident and my grandmother only 10 blocks away. Thank you Shane for protecting them for all those years. I am eternally grateful! I never would have imagined your precious life would end protecting those closest to me. Thank you Teresa for all of the nights of peaceful rest your husband gave me knowing my family was safe. May he now rest peacefully in the loving arms of God our Father and in the presence of Our Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ.
In Him,
Andrea Thompson

Dear Bennett Family,
As I spoke with a dear friend of mine Mrs. Cathy Hill and discovered that the fallen deputy on June 12th was a former high school classmate, my heart just sank. I’ve searched for the right words to say in order to comfort you but I am at a loss for those words. So, instead I’m leaving words of my memories of Shane and hope that they will bring you a smile as you reflect back on his life. I had the privilege of attending High School with Shane. I say privilege because that is exactly what it was. Shane was one of the nicest and most genuine guys I have ever known and in my humble but highly accurate opinion, one of the best divers in the state! It was so cool to watch him compete! He had a passion to be the best in everything he set out to do. No doubt he had that same passion in his line of duty. As a high school freshman, Shane asked me to my very first high school dance. A true act of kindness because we didn’t really know each other. I regret that we lost touch after high school. Your son was a true gentlemen and someone who I could count on to pick me up when ever I was down. Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Bennett for raising him up to be loving, gentle, kind, and to be a hero. I consider it an honor to call him friend. Theresa, if I knew anything about Shane, it was this. He didn’t do anything half way. I am sure that he loved you immensely and was a wonderful father! My condolences to each of you in your time of loss. To his colleagues with the Harris County Sheriff's office I also say thank you for your commitment to protect and to serve. 1 Cor 16:13
Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong.
To the men and women who have lost a loved one in the line of duty I remind you, Mat 10:28 28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
There will come a day when those who took the lives of your loved ones will face a final judgment far more devastating than any verdict can render!
Shane, my friend may you rest in peace – I CAN ONLY IMAGINE!
