Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Shane Ronald Bennett

Thank you Sir for your bravery, courage and sacrifice.

Not a day has passed when I haven't thought of or told a "Shane" story. I did and still do, love you like a brother. I still find myself ducking when I say something negative. You never missed the opportunity to make the correction. I always admired your optimism and your dedication to others. I will never forget the lessons I learned from you. Even in your absence, you continue to influence me. I remember you whenever I become pessimistic and am forced to smile. I look forward to telling my daughter about the man she is named for. Your memory will never fade.

I saw a shooting star tonight, the night after Christmas. I like to think it was you. It seems that since you were killed, that first week I saw more shooting stars than I had seen in my entire life, and it has been that way since. When you cross my mind I can look up and see another star fall from the sky. Maybe that is your way of letting us know you are still there. You will forever be a shooting star. Merry Christmas Shane.

Shane,
I did not know you well, however my husband did. He talked about you countless times and with great fondness, he truly loved you. I remember the day you called to tell us Alyssa was born, you had such pride and joy in your voice.

You have been a hero of mine since that tragic morning. My husband went on that call with you, I truly believe you saved his life. I will always be forever gratefull. I assure you not a day goes by that you don't enter our thoughts in one way or another. You are forever in our hearts and minds.

Shane,
I really wish I could pick up the phone and call you. I miss you so much. I got on a deer lease this year with my brother-in-law Jamey who is a Fort Worth police office. You guys have so much in common, that I see you in him. You and I had so many good times hunting together, and I always hoped we could get back on a deer lease together as "men" with our own families.

I never was good at this stuff as you know, but I just wanted to give you a holler.

I love you.

Did you know in life what a strong family you have? They love and miss you so much. As a survivor myself I truly understand their emotions. You were a wonderful father, husband, and son as well as the best on the street.

I feel very close to Teresa, Alyssa, and your parents. In fact, I must ask you to let me know just how well you knew Micheal Eakin, my son. You hold the details, but I know in my heart that you were friends on Earth and are probably telling stories, jokes, and smiling at those of us you left behind.

Respect, love, and prayers,
Micheal's mom

Shane,

How you do it Son, I have no idea. This is the second anniversary of your passing and you are still in are hearts as much now as you were then (if not more).

GOD, I wish I could have spent more time with you. Every day that you were learning from me, I was learning from you. Just talking to you on the side of the road or being with you on scenes made me a better Deputy. I thought I knew how to treat people and I tried to use the analogy “you get respect with respect.” But you took this to a whole new level. You almost had people laughing and thanking you when they were in the back of your patrol car and they knew they were going to prison for the next two years of their life. I have had them thank me on many occasions, but I could never make them laugh :-). That was just your affect on people.

Teresa and your Dad had a great get-together for you this year. The turnout was crazy. Carl made all of the briskets, so you know the food was good. From what I hear the adults had a great time as well as the kids. Everyone left with a full belly and fond memories. You wouldn’t have had it any other way.

From my conversations with you at night, you know I miss you and I will be there for your family as long as I am here. Never doubt this.

Your friend,
J.D. Maddox

Deputy Bennett, I have never met you sir, but I did meet your father today. In closing he thanked me for the job I do everyday and mentioned you, his son he lost due to the same job. I will never forget the hurt I saw in his eyes. I decided to look for myself, and after reading your reflections, I would say you touched every person you met in a great way. Rest in Peace brother. You made the Ultimate Sacrifice.

Its through tear filled eyes I read these sentiments exclaiming how fantastic you were in life. Im comforted that someone was able to say it before I was. I think about all our shifts sitting in a car together at the extra-job, laughing and killing hours until we were able to get home to our families. I remember all the fun nights we had working graveyards in District II. I miss your phone calls in the mornings after I abandoned you to work dayshift. You were such a great person that anyone who got around you automatically wanted to be a better person themselves. You influenced every life you touched and others who have only heard of you from people who really knew you. Hope you are getting some good training up there so you can show all of us when we go up to meet you. Save some crooks for us. Your buddy always, Bugs.

Shane,
It has been 1yr 4months and 19 days since you were taken from us. We will never know why God took you from us so soon until we ourselves are with you in heaven. I miss you as much now as I did then. I love you as much if not more than I did then. I am so grateful and thankful to God for being allowed to have someone as passionate and kind as you in my life. My life was forever changed by you. If I was given the chance to do it all again, even knowing the severe pain of loss and that like a scar it never reallly goes away - it's just less intense as time goes by, I would. I would do it all again for you. Thank you for you, for all the wonderful memories, and for leaving me with such a wonderful family.

Hey Buddy,

It has been fourteen months since I received the tragic news. Mom & I are taking it one day at a time. So young, so full of life and with oh so many goals. It is hard to understand and accept the fact you are gone, however, you will never be forgotten. I miss our special times together and riding "second man" with you. I still feel like a second man compared to what you had accomplished and what you had in mind for you and your family. I just wanted you to know how much I respect you and what you believed in. Not a day goes by that I don't reflect on your life and what you stood for. I will close for now and let you know, Justice is being served.

Love always to you Bud,

Pop

Another year has passed, and as we ask for a moment of silence over the East Dispatch Channel, the radio room becomes reverently quite. No one here has forgotten those moments a year ago and we never shall.

Alyssa, (aka… Munchkin)

On October1, 2000, GOD smiled, and you were brought into this world and not only were you a blessing to your Mom and Dad, you were blessed to have the special Mom and Dad that you did. You were their world and every moment of every day revolved around you.

I worked with your Dad and I knew him before you came along. Your Dad was a very special man. He was the kind of person that comes along very far and few between. He was a man of honor, courage, commitment, and loyalty. He was the kind of man that I would have chosen for my brother, if I could have had one. Anyone that had ever met him loved him and respected him. He had that kind of personality. He was jovial, sincere, funny, serious, all at the same time. To know him was to love him.

Your Dad earned my love, respect, and trust. This does not happen very often, believe me. I respected and applauded his ability as a Deputy Sheriff and his determination and drive to better himself, for himself and for his family.

When you came along it was like, GOD himself had touched him. He was so happy and proud of you; it was as if he was floating when he walked into the room, and you could not have pried the smile off his face. He was constantly letting everyone know how you were doing and showing the latest pictures and telling the latest stories.

Your Dad was taken away from you and your Mom while he was doing the very job that he loved and swore to do to the best of his ability. While doing this, he saved the life of another Mom and her child. You will always be proud of him and he will always be your Hero. He gave his life, so they could keep theirs. Your Dad was a true Hero, a true Friend, and he will be greatly missed by everyone that had the honor of knowing him.

Respectfully,
J.D. Maddox, Jr.

A friend has become an angel. The phone rang and my heart sank. Shane was shot and being rushed to the hospital. Emotions flew, heart strings pulled, tears shed. Memories raced through my head all night as I awaited a call telling me Shane would be ok.

I remembered the day Shane told me they were going to have a baby. He was so proud. His love shined from his being. He said is a quiet voice "did he tell you?" .. pause..He said "We are going to have a baby." I was so excited for them and I just remember him beaming with joy. He just lit up the room. Shane was so proud of his family and he always worked to achieve more. He was always bettering himself in one way or another. I have never seen that kind of drive to be the best at whatever he tried. He wanted the world for his family and he was making it happen.

Shane's memories will live forever. He is a true hero and will never be forgotten.

I really didn't get to know Shane all that well, but the couple of times we were together were great.
I met him at a dinner the department assigned us to attend, and I was seated next to him. He was one of those guys you just instantly liked. He kept me cracking up through this whole boring fancy dinner.
He joked that 'cause I worked in a "ritzy" district even the coffee comes served in china.
Shane was truly a GREAT person.
