Reflections for Border Patrol Agent Roberto Javier Duran

I was lucky to service on board USS Boxer (LHD-4) with QM1 Duran. I was a snot nosed signalman in Navigation with him and he loved to pick on me. In a good way, like an uncle. He was smart as a whip and very witty. He was stern and direct, but kind at heart. I can still hear him scream out “flame on” when he saw me, due to the way I styled my hair. A play on the way my hair looked like the flames coming off Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four. We must keep the memories of our lost ones alive. RIP Roberto Duran. Love you, shipmate!

Uncle Bobby J...May 6 has passed me by...20 years since you got taken from us. I hope my dad & grandpa are up there with you...I lost them both in 2016. Is Joe Perez up there making you laugh...we lost him too. Not a day goes by that I don't think of you. I miss you constantly. I am going to take a trip out to your crash site soon in Casa Grande. I believe I'm the only family that never got to go since I live in Austin. You are forever in my heart. I miss you. Casa Grande & Ft. Bliss soon to pay my respects to you.

On today, the 20th anniversary of your death I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country-not just as a Law Enforcement Officer but also when you served with the USN-especially during Operation Southern Watch in the Persian Gulf. And to your Family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.

Roberto was my room mate during the border patrol academy in SC, 1998. We graduated together, class 361.
He was a great person and I considered him a friend. He loved his family and he loved his country. He was a dedicated agent and a veteran, and I feel privileged to have known him. As I write this I still feel the same sadness as I did the day I heard the terrible news.

A ship sails and I stand watching till it fades on the horizon. All eyes are wet with tears, and someone says, “There he goes.”
And just at that moment, when someone at my side says he is gone, they are watching and waiting on the other side. When he comes over their horizon their voices take up a glad shout – “Here he comes!”
That is what dying is: A horizon and just the limit of our sight.
Lift us up O Lord, that we may see further.

R.I.P. Roberto. You will never be forgotten

Roberto Duran will always be in our hearts. I had the privialege of having QM1 Roberto Duran as my right hand man and my LPO on Board the USS Boxer. He was a true professional and always there to help his Sailors. I just learned of this tragic loss and my heart and soul goes out to the Duran Family. He will be missed as he touched many people lives.

Uncle Bobby J,

My thoughts and tears have yet to stop for you, I miss you so much. As 4 am rolls around, I'm up thinking of you with tears falling down my cheeks. I knew something was wrong when my dad picked me up from school that day...never was I prepared for what he told me. The world stopped for you, a piece of our hearts were taken that day. I hope I made you proud...you were right, I was the 1st one out of El Paso. Hardest thing I've ever done, but I pulled through. A day doesn't go by that we don't think about you, we love you so vey much. For those that read this, I just want to say thank you for sharing and expressing the love you have for my uncle. Its truly appreciated! Until we meet again...

Ten years seems like yesterday.

God bless the family & friends of Roberto. I know that he's been up there, watching out for all of us with that quick wit and sharp eyes, and more than willing to jump in and help guide us when we need it (just as he always was).

Roberto, you're still remembered & missed by all those who were fortunate enough to know you.

Rob Duran was my first class petty officer when I was on the Uss Boxer from 1995 to 1997, he was always professional and had a can do never quit attitude. He was an awesome leader. I hate to receive this news, he will be mourned and missed.

Hi Dad, well first of all i miss you more than you know. I wish you were here that way you could teach me a thing or two.You know like a father to son thing. We never got to do things together, then again there's a lot of things me and you didn't get to do. But I haven't lost hope. I believe that in the future we'll get to do all the things we didn't do. I'll be waiting..... and I WILl see you again, and when I do we have a lot of catching up to do. I love you, and I'll see you again someday.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.
