Reflections for Sergeant Stephen Edward Davenport
To Sgt. Stephen Edward Davenport, his loved ones and his fellow officers:
On this the fourth anniversary of your tragic death, please know that your memory is revered and honored today.
May your family continue be to comforted by the warm embrace of their law enforcement family, and other police survivors who share this painful journey with them. My heart is with your family.
It is also with the officers who were with you that awful day, and I pray for their continued healing. I can tell you from personal experience that the family of fallen officers always cherish the fellow officers who were with their beloved when they fell on that hallowed ground.
Reading all the loving reflections left by those who cared for Steve gives us an understanding of what a good and honorable man you were and of the high esteem with which you are held.
Sgt. Davenport, as a peace officer you rescued us, saved our possessions, our lives and our families. You are one of the rare heroes among us. You were always there for us in the most traumatic moments of our lives. No matter when we called, we just expected that you would come and do whatever it took to help us, and you always met our expectations. Your selflessness and dedication are awe-inspiring.
This world, this country, your community truly are better places because of you. To have lost you is a great tragedy, an irreplaceable, immeasurable loss for society. We are grateful for and to you, and honor you for all you did for us day in and day out whether you received a word of thanks or praise.
Rest in Peace, Stephen. I am so humbled by your valor and courage.
This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the eleven years of distinquished service Sgt. Davenport gave to his community and the citizens of Texas, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on May 2, 2002.

I remember Steve as a cute little pudgy guy that lived down the street. We grew up in the same town and the same Baptist Church, and his father (my pastor) married my husband and me once I grew up. Steve always had a big heart, and went out in such a brave way, protecting the rights of others and just doing his job well. He was loved and he is missed!!

You and I have many memories together. I always asked if you were scared in your job and if you were, you never let me know. I will never forget you! You helped me many times when I first moved to Houston and also when I moved back home to Teague. Thanks for all you did for me. I love you, Leah

I worked with Sgt. Davenport at the Limestone County Sheriff's Office. When I was first hired, I rode with him on night shift. I had come from an agency where very little support existed for the police department. Steve was a large help in adjusting to agency where the officers actually cared about one another. We didn't always see eye to eye, but I always respected his opinions. I miss you my friend.

It took awhile for me to pull this up. Steve was one of my best friends. Before he ever started his Academy at Texas A&M, he came out and rode with me to see if it was what he really wanted to do. We had been close friends ever since.
It touches my heart to see all the heart felt messages as well as the hearts of his family. They have been like another family to me and I know when I tell them about the memorials it will be a comfort as best can be. Thank You all for your thoughts, prayers and sympathies.

I don't know of any words that can comfort the family or satisfactorily express what we feel when an officer is lost. Although I never met Sergeant Davenport, I knew and worked with one of the other officers wounded with him. Perhaps the family will find solace knowing that when Sergeant Davenport was taken, he was in the company of one of the best officers and person I have had the privilege to work with in my 18 years of law enforcement.

Dear Law Enforcement Family,
I do not know you but I am so sorry for your loss. I cannot imagine what you are going through. I am the wife of a police officer and I pray each night that my husband comes home to me. His last words to me before he leaves for work is, “I love you and I’ll be home.” I pray he is able to keep his word.
God be with you and your family.

I worked with Steve when he came to Pct 1. He was always a happy easy going guy with a ready smile. You never could tell what he was up to with that smirky grin he had. My heart goes out to Steve's family. His loss is felt by all his many friends here at Pct. 1. Steve left Houston telling us he was going home. Now he's at home with the Lord.
