Reflections for Sheriff Samuel Wilson Catron

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. YOUR TIME HERE EARTH IS DONE, GO REST IN PEACE AND LOOK DOWN ON US AND KEEP US SAFE.

PO MICHAEL A BAKER
KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI POLICE DEPT

I shed tears for you and your family. I am so sorry for your loss. God be with you and your family always.

Tracy
Policeman's Wife

I met Sam in 1991, while living in Russell Springs. I was just a young punk who had no idea where I was heading in life, but had always dreamed of being in law enforcement. One afternoon, I was driving near the Sheriff's Department, looking at the patrol cars. I stopped to get a closer look, when Sam walked up and introduced himself. No "what are you doing here" or gruffness of any type. Just a kind, Kentucky niceness I was not used to, coming from Florida as I had. When I told him I wanted to one day be an officer, he told me to get into his car and we went riding all over town. I still remember the words that he said, like it was yesterday..."You won't make any money doing this...but you'll have the time of your life...and you'll be able to sleep sound when you get home."
Sam, it's been a long time my friend, but I pray that you're sleeping soundly in Heaven now. God has a special place for warrior's like you...
till I see you again...but not yet...

Former Sergeant, Midway Police Dept. Fl.

November 13, 2001. That day I lost one of my best friends, Deputy Billy Walls, Jessamine County Sheriff's Department. Now another senseless act of violence has taken Sheriff Sam Catron. I grew up in Lincoln County and worked in Somerset for three years before going back to college and becoming a police officer. During those three years I learned from the citizens of Pulaski county that he was well liked and very well respected as sheriff. His willingness to give of his time and the many hats he wore as a peace officer earned him my respect as a fellow peace officer. My prayers are with his family and all the citizens of Pulaski county as they work through this terrible tragedy.
The following is a poem given to me by a friend, fellow officer, and the man I have trusted my life with more times than I can count.

When God Made Peace Officers

When the Lord was creating peace officers, He was into his sixth day of overtime. An angel appeared and said,"You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one."
And the Lord said,"Have you ever read the specs on this order? A peace officer has to be able to run five miles through alleys in the dark, scale walls, and enter homes the health inspector wouldn't touch and not wrinkle his uniform. He has to be able to sit in an undercover car all day on a stake out, cover a homicide scene that night, canvass the neighborhood for witnesses and testify in court the next day. He has to be in top physical condition at all times, running on black coffee and half-eaten meals. And has to have six pairs of hands."
The angel shook her head slowly and said,"Six pairs of hands, no way."
"It's not the hands that are causing me all the problems," said the Lord,"it's the three pairs of eyes an officer has to have."
"Thats the standard model?" asked the angel.
The lord nodded. "One pair that sees through a bulge on a pocket before he asks,'May I see what's in there, sir?' (when he already knows and wishes he had taken that accounting job.) Another pair here in the side of his head for his partner's safety. And another pair of eyes here in the front that can look reassuringly at a bleeding victim and say,'you'll be alright ma'am,' when he knows it isn't so."
"Lord," said the angel, touching his sleeve,"rest and work on this tomorrow."
"I can't," responded the Lord,"I already have a model that can talk a 250 pound drunk into a patrol car without incident and feed a family of five on a civil service paycheck."
The angel circled the model of the peace officer very slowly. "Can it think," she inquired.
"You bet," declared the Lord with pride. "It can tell you the elements of a hundred crimes; recite Miranda warnings in its sleep; detain, investigate, search and arrest a gang member in the street in less time than it takes five learned judges to debate the legality of the stop, and still keeps a sense of humor. This officer also has phenomenal personality control. He can deal with crime scenes painted in hell, coax a confession from a child abuser, comfort a murder victim's family and then read in the daily paper how law enforcement isn't sensitive to the rights of criminal suspects."
Finally the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the peace officer,"There's a leak," she pronounced. "I told you that you were trying to put too much into this model."
"Thats not a leak," said the Lord,"it's a tear."
"What's the tear for," asked the angel.
"It's for bottled-up emotions, for fallen comrades, for commitment to that funny piece of cloth called the American flag, and for justice."
"You're a genius," proclaimed the angel.
The Lord looked somber. "I didn't put it there," He said.

Thank you Sheriff for your dedication, integrity and courage to do the task most could not do. The final price sometimes has to be paid but the legacy never will fade.

Deputy John Bourne
Jessamine County Sheriff

The first time I met Sherrif Catron I was working with the Williamsburg City Police Department. It was about 9 years ago when a call came in that a truck carrying a small bull dozier had been stolen. About 4:00am my partner and I spotted the truck. The suspect spotted us too and attempted to run us down in the truck. The suspect then drove into a wooded area wrecked the truck and fled on foot. The only department with a K-9 unit that would respond at 4:00 in the morning was the Pulaski County Sherrif's Department. A Pulaski County Sherrif's K-9 Unit arrived in 45 minutes (normally a 1 hour and 15 minute drive). The K-9 unit immediately picked up the trail and was able to track the suspect to a house where he was armed and barricaded. After several hours the suspect was taken into custody. The Pulaski County Sherrif's K-9 Unit never left the scene, he stayed with us till the end. After it was over I told K-9 Unit thanks and to tell his Sherrif thanks for allowing him to help us. He just smiled and said the sherrif would get the message. That's when my Chief introduced me to the Sherrif of Pulaski County and K-9 Unit-Sam Catron.
