I am a Great granddaughter of William Rutherford Hunter. I recall in our family history that one of the past generations also had a grandfather of William Rutherford Hunter who I believe first settle in Texas when it was really the wild west! My father spoke of his father growing up in Texas with his brothers and sisters. My father Franklin was named after one of the family members as well. My Uncle William is also named after his Grandfather William.

Deputy Hunter was a great grandfather I never knew. I have read about his bravery after being critically wounded and the five children and spouse and their hardship.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 117th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Your memory will always be honored and revered for time does not not diminish respect.

Rest In Peace.

I stop by this website often after the death of two dear friends with the NCSHP (Troopers Calvin Taylor E.O.W. October 3, 2001 and Anthony Cogdill E.O.W. May 30, 2003). Unfortunately, I had to add the name of another friend recently. Deputy Jeffery Hewitt, Buncombe County (NC) Sheriff’s Department, E.O.W. April 4, 2004.

I want to honor all of those who gave their life in the line of duty. Although your death was many many years ago, you are still a hero.

God Bless the men and women who continue to serve their communities in our great Nation.

It is a shame that Deputy Hunters death was forgotten for so long. For many years Sheriff Burnett was thought to be the only fallen officer from the department. It was not until 2001 that the Van Zandt Co Sheriff's Department was (again) made aware of his death.
