Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Robert Michael Tanner, Jr.
Everyday I'am reminded how small this world is, for instance several years ago I'am on patrol on the North end of the county when a vehicle drives by me and the license plate reads "DEPUTY17". Sometime passes and the owner of the vehicle apparently called our office for assistance to which I responded. There I met Mrs. Tanner and during our conversation she explained what happened to Robert. I see this vehicle often and it always reminds me of the price paid to sleep peacefully in our beds at night. Tonight while surfing the internet and the memorial page the Tanners came to mind so here I sit getting to know Robert. I truly appreciate what I have read and its given a deeper stronger sense of appreciation for his scarifice, Thank You!

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

My thoughts are with your loved ones today. It has been 5 years and you have not been forgotten nor will that ever be the case. Continue to keep watch over your loved ones and those still out on patrol guarding the Thin Blue Line. You will never be forgotten.

NOT FORGOTTEN!!!
August 20, 2006
Tanner,
Today is the first day in a long time that someone has not asked me about the 17 sticker on my cruiser. It is not that anyone has forgotten, it is that they know. They know of the heros in our community. They know of the ones that have gave their all to make our communities a safer place. Myself and others often tell people of the meaning of 17 and 12.
Brother you are not forgotten! You have only gone to a better place with God.

Uncle Robbie...i can't believe it's been 4 years today. I miss you and love you more than ever. It's just as hard now to think about everything as it was the night it happened. I don't go a day without thinking about you. Everyday, something reminds me of you. Everyone misses you...my dad, justin, grandma...we love you so much. We miss your smile, your laugh, you caring personality. I miss all those things, but i miss your hugs more than anything. Everytime we'd see each other, you'd stop whatever you were doing to give me a hug. I can't wait to see you again so i can get one more hug... Keep watching over us. We love you.
*the only thing that gives me hope is i know i'll see you again someday.*
