Reflections for Corporal Dyke "A. J." Coursen

May God hold Corp.Coursen in the hollow of His Hand and give comfort to his family. The death of one lessens us all.

May God watch over and protect you Mrs. Coursen. I didnt know your husband but I feel as though I know him in my heart for he and I wore the same badge. I am no longer in law enforcement but on January 8, 2002 at approximately 1700 I was with him and Dana in spirit and prayer. As I sit here with tears in my eyes and my heart full of pain I remember that they loved what they did, you cant be in this field and feel otherwise. Not many people can say that. Up til the end they were and will always be Heros.

God Bless and keep you.

Dyke and I spent many many hours together both personally and working together on the LaGrange Ambulance Service as volunteers. I'm sure many remember Dyke from Keystone as well as his many friends from the Autobody class at LCJVS. Although I lost contact with Dyke years ago, I've never forgotten the time we spent as friends and I never will. God Bless you Dyke, Rest in Peace.

The Policeman stood
and faced his god
Which must always come to pass,
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass

"step foward now, Policeman
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"

The policeman Squared his shoulders
and said, "no, Lord I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry bades
cant always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
when the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to call their fear.

So, if you've a place for me,
Lord, It needn't be so grand,
I've neither expected nor had
too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had after trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.

"step forward now, policeman,
You've done your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets.
YOU'VE DONE YOUR TIME IN HELL!!!"

I hope your last year was wonderful Dyke, you deserved a good year. Life was rough at times, but you always had an encouraging smile. I miss you Dyke, and I dont understand why you, why you are gone, but life goes on here on earth as we know it, but will never be the same.

Good bye Dyke for now...but I know u are in a better place.

One 01-08-02 we lost our brother A.J. - Although I had only answered a few calls with Coursen, it was easy to see that he was a stand-up guy and a good cop. Our thoughts and prayers go out to A.J.'s and Dana's families. - BLESSED ARE THE PEACE MAKERS, FOR THEY ARE THE CHILDREN OF GOD...

Dyke was a great guy. Everyone liked him. He was always there to help. He will be missed by his friends & family.

Alan L Leiby Detective, Retired
Elyria, Ohio Police Department

I became Dykes' friend when we worked together at a car dealership in 1984. We went to the academy together in '87 in Ohio. His sense of humor helped me get through that tough four months. I will never forget the good times we shared and lessons we learned together as friends. My deep condolences go out to the Beaufort Sheriffs Office, the LaGrange Police Department in Ohio, and Dykes' family. Though his untimely and senseless death has torn at us, we will remain strong and committed as a Law Enforcement Family. Dyke will never be forgotten.

Please, accept in the name of my wife Aleidy and myself our deepest condolences in the death of Deputies Coursen and Tate of your Department. It is always a heartbreaking blow for us in Law Enforcement to learn of the death of a brother or sister in blue. May God grant both Deputies eternal rest as well as consolation to their families, friends and coworkers.
