Reflections for Major Alister C. McGregor

Family and Friends,

To the friends, family and admirers of Alister,

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to you. I have experienced for myself the trauma that follows an officer's death by accidental gunfire, as well as watched those around me be crushed by it. There are so many questions and so few answers. It has been said that time heals, but I disagree - I think love that we find in fellow mourners is what heals. It just falls into step with time. I pray that you can know that God walks with you through your grief.
Simply from knowing Alister's occupation I know he was an excellent, extraordinary and rare human being. It's often difficult to find words to do policemen justice. I check ODMP every now and then to see if any new reflections have been posted for my dear departed friend, and for a long time I have been relieved each time to see that no new officers have passed because of accidental gunfire. Now it breaks my heart to see another name on the list. Accidental gunfire seems so needless, and preventable, and there doesn't seem to be a place to turn for answers, much less for peace, and there is no time machine to turn back. It's a mistake that crumbles lives, and we are left faced with many problems, among them: who we should forgive. The path is different for every person, but always difficult. I'm praying for all of you as you find the paths you're going to take. Alister is watching over you and loves all of you.

God bless --

I am so sorry for the loss of your loved one. I want to say Thank You for the great contribution Alister made in the world. You must have been very proud of him as I am sure he was of you. You are in such a rough place right now but we want you to know that you have a very large group of people that care for you and support you who you have never met, other survivors. We will pray for you, your families and your Dept. as you make your way through this difficult time.

To the Family, Relatives, Friends, and Colleauges of Captain McGregor,

We are on bended knee for all of you in this critical time. Many times we are prone to ask "why?" And there is nothing wrong with that, however, it is comforting to know that we are certainly not responsible for the answer. The one who extends the answer is also the one who comforts us and has promised to be with us in all things.

May you find peace and comfort in the Lord now and for the days to come.

Words alone cannot express the pain and suffering that comes from a tragedy like this. Often we accept the fact that danger and injury or death may be a part of our profession. But when it comes in this tragic form, it hits harder than anyone can imagine, unless one has experienced it. I do not pretend to know how my brothers and sisters in EPPD are feeling this day. I know that any loss is a pain beyond description.
I would like to offer my condolences and prayers to Captain Alister C. McGregor’s family, his friends and all of those involved and effected.
Let us all take from this the understanding of how each day is a precious gift and should never be taken for granted… It could be anyone of us, any day, any time… Yesterday it was Captain McGregor’s turn…
I post the following in his honor…. May God bless him, his family and all his brothers and sisters in the EPPD…

BLUE AUTUMN

That day was like others nothing special at all
We passed one another said hi in the hall
We took it for granted that nothing would change
But then, time seemed to gel, it felt surely strange

Suddenly the news struck with lightening heat
Officer down, my heart skipped a beat
See we’re all brothers that hang from the same family tree
But today, it was your turn; your leaf was blown free

We finally break rank and most walk away
They turn to look back, just a few there still stay
The ones from your squad still stand by and stare
Not able to leave, a pain they all share

The crowd is all gone and the wind shakes the trees
The tears start to fall like the dry autumn leaves
Why was it you and not one of them?
A question they’ll ask again and again

So now when we see our brother go by
Why not take a second to say more than just hi
Tomorrow might be too late, don’t you see
Who’s leaf will be next… blown from the tree…?

My condolences got out to Captain McGregor's family and Captain McGregor's fellow Officers. Its always a shock when you read about a Police Officer dying doing what he or she does best, but it hits home a little harder when its a Department that borders with your Department.
I never met Captain McGregor but from what I have heard and read about him he was an outstanding Officer and will be sadly missed. Rest in peace my Brother.

My heart goes out to the friends and family of Captain McGregor, and also to the other Officer's on the scene, particularly the one who's weapon fired the fatal shot. No one involved will ever be the same. May God Bless and keep you in your hours of need.
