Don, we miss you every day. Today, Kipp submitted an update for your ODMP to let them know that you did, INDEED, die in the line of duty. We will forever be grateful to you for introducing us to each other. It's a crazy, small world; and you have influenced ours more than words can say. We just wish you were still with us...and with Tracy and your boys.... to celebrate it. Love you, brother.

Thanks Don for being an important part of my life. You welcomed me and showed me around Fort Polk when I arrived as a new private. Your leadership went very far in your short life. May God continue to bless your family with nothing but the best memories of a good man.

I was a young Marine just out of the service in 1992 and living in an apartment complex in Wilmington, NC. One night while I was dumping the trash at the dumpster I met another guy doing the same. We started talking and this stranger, Don Miller, asked me what my plans were going to be now and I told him I wanted to be a cop. He started to laugh and told me that he was one and he would be happy to help me. He helped me throughout BLET and was a reference for me when I got my job with the New Hanover Co. Sheriff in 1992. We stayed friends until I left in 2000 to go work in Fairfax County Virginia. One day while in roll call they read off the name of an officer killed in NC named Don Miller. I honestly lost my breath. Later on while sitting in my cruiser I started to tear up thinking about my friend. I miss you my brother and I think of you often. May God watch over and bless your family.

Don Miller was like a second father to me. I was shocked when i heard the bad news. I was even more shocked when I saw my father cry at his funeral. It was such a tragedy when he died. He left a great wife and two wonderful children behind. It wasnt just a loss to the New Bern Police Department, but to this nation. Only great heros, such as Donald Miller will always be remembered with great honor and respect. We miss you very much Mr. Don.

Hey Boy,

To this day it’s still a hard fact to believe you’re not here. I choose to reflect on the past and remember how it was when Don Miller was with us. I fear that the passing of time your legend would be forgotten. I know in my heart and soul that I will never forget. A few months ago I caught a player in the game again that you and I got back in the day. While driving him to the Sheriff’s Office he told me that when he heard about what happened with you and Tracy, he said that he was truly sorry for all the “cop’s cause you was bad ass” but mostly Tracy and I, then went on about how “f” up that was and no one deserves that. Brother, I almost stopped and let him go, then I thought how pissed you would be for letting one go. It still meant something and touched me but he still got cuffed and stuffed.

The 23rd came and went and I thought about you a lot. The 25th is here and I think about you more. This year just as the ones past and all the ones that come I will miss you always. Things are truly wonderful. I guess I just miss my friend.

I love You Brother.

We miss you everyday. You lost your life in such a random, unnecessary act of violence, but in the process spared countless other innocent victims. Your presence and legacy lives on through your two beautiful boys and through your wife. I watch over them and love them with all my heart, as I know you do. You are a true hero, Don Miller, who will never be forgotten.
All my love,
KJ

Hey Don. Was thinking about you today and just wanted to check in. I can't believe it has already been 8 years since you were taken from us. I will never forget that call. I really enjoyed our times together at WPD. [and the fun parties you would throw!] You are truly a cops cop. Everyone knew that if things went bad and you were working that you would be coming with all you had. You are truly missed. Give Eddie a hug for me. I'm sure you two are having some fun up there! I miss you buddy.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 8th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

I pray for solace for all those who love and miss you as I know both the pain and pride are forever.
