Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer Clinton Warren Hunter

Hard to believe you've been gone so long Clint. Seems like just yesterday I was standing with you as you married your beautiful bride. You continue to be an inspiration to my family, especially Thomas who wants to follow your footsteps into service. We'll never forget you.

Clinton,
There is not a day that goes by that I do not think of you. Though you have been gone from us for almost 7 years, our love for you still goes on. You will remain forever in my heart. Rest peacefully.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

CLINT WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED AS THE YOUNG REDHEADED OFFICER WHO CAME INTO CENTRAL BOOKING ( TRAVIS COUNTY ) WITH A SUSPECT IN CUFFS, AND A SMILE ON HIS FACE. I NEVER HEARD A HARSH WORD FROM HIS MOUTH, OR MET AN OFFICER THAT HAD A CROSS WORD ABOUT HIM. I STILL CAN HEAR HIS SOFT VOICE SAY " HEY BIG JOHN, CAN YOU BOOK THIS GUY FOR ME?" WHAT A SWELL GUY. MY HEART GOES OUT TO HIS WIFE AND CHILD AND MAY YOU FIND PEACE IN THE FACT THAT CLINT IS WATCHING OVER AND PROTECTING ALL OF US STILL. I MISS YOU BUDDY...I DON'T WORK FOR TRAVIS COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE ANYMORE, BUT I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU. REST EASY.

I was stationed with Clint in 2/2 ACR at Fort Polk La. We served in Bosnia together and became pretty good friends. He was always honest, trustworthy, and most of all, loyal to all he encountered. His dream was to get out of the Army after his tour was up and be a Austin Police Officer. His dream came true, and sadly came to a tragic end. My deepest condolences go out to his wife whom I met only once and his daughter. I cannot begin to tell you how deep his loss saddens myself and former members of 1st Platton F Troop 2/2 ACR. God Bless...

I had the pleasure of attending the Academy with Clint, and what a pleasure it was....Clint always had the entire class laughing. Clint was a great friend and an excellent Police Officer...I never heard a cross word said about him. His death came as a shock to us all and he is sorely missed. Rest in peace brother.

While I didn't know officer Hunter, I knew his nephew and through him, knew that Hunter was an extordinary officer. Through his sacrafice we are all able to understand and know what a true officer in blue stands for. While my condolences go out to Officer Hunter's family, may the Austin Police Department know that I, my classmates of Mr. Conelly's class, and all the explorers of the GPD Explorers group shall continue to purse the acceptence of the thin blue line.

Officer Hunter's death serves as a reminder that any one of us could leave home one day and never make it back. I feel for his family, his department, and our brotherhood in general for the loss of a fine officer who truly would have went far.

September 2, 2003

This year is 2003, and several police officers have been killed in recent weeks trying to set up spike strips. Officer Hunter would have stopped the fleeing vehicle safely by deflating its tires slowly, causing no harm to the suspect, and he paid for protecting that suspect with his life. It should never have happened and I'm very sorry that he was killed. God bless his family and may he rest in peace.
