Reflections for Trooper Hans-Peter Roelle

It has been nine years, since you gave the ultimate sacrifice while serving your community and state. Your memories live on thru your family, friends and co-workers. The Glenn Highway Memorial is a constant reminder to all that past of your ultimate sacrifice. You and your family will always be remembered and not forgotten.

YOUR DADDY WORE A BADGE

Your daddy wore a badge, she said
So cry your grieving tears,
Then dry your eyes and lift your head;
He lived to lessen fears.

He wore a badge with pride, she said,
And justice was his dream;
He lived to serve and serving died,
And though it may not seem
That one cop's death could make this land
A better place to be,
His life was where he took a stand
And forced the blind to see.

So dry your tears and lift your head
And make your daddy proud;
Be strong in heart, for he's not dead--
Just lost amid the crowd.
His dream lives on in you, my son
(the widow softly spoke).
She squeezed his hand,
Then sorrow won;
I watched as her heart broke.

Then something changed;
A sigh half-sighed escaped her lips unfinished.
She straightened up;
Although he'd died, his life was undiminished.

Your daddy wore a badge, she smiled,
be proud of who he was.
He did his job, (she hugged her child)
Because, my son, because...

Trooper Roelle,

I often sit at the CMV Station they named after you and run radar on the highway. It never fails to remind me of your sacrifice for our State and, sadly, how there could never be a fitting enough tribue for what you did that day. Never forgotten!

Hans,
It is rare that a week goes by that a memory from that day doesn't still remind me of how precious and fragile life is. You gave yours for them, and there is no greater love for life than that. I think it very fitting that on the place of your death now rests a place of birth and healing. Go with God brother.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Soon it will be 6 years that you were called away from duty. I know during that time your loved ones have thought of you every day and will continue to do so for as long as they walk this earth. I especially know your mother's pain and what she deals with on a daily basis for there is no greater loss than to lose a child. You are a true hero and heroes never die. Continue to keep watch over your loved ones, let them feel your presence to let them know you are watching over them. Also, continue to keep watch over those still guarding the Thin Blue Line. You will never be forgotten.

I never knew Hans but have come to know of him through his mother, Ursula. She misses him terribly and feels certain she will see him again. She remains very proud of him not only for who he was but for the kind of man he was--sacrificing for others. I only wish I could have known him. God Bless You, Hans!

Hans,
My Uncle, friend, and favorite officer. You helped me grow to a well mannered and respected young woman, even when you where no longer there. I thank you for just being there and helping me with the little things when I was a child, care free of life and growing up. Your children taught me how to be an adult at a young age. They are amazing and will always be. I love you and miss you very much.

Vonda, your niece.

He sure was a gentlemen about me speeding hans was a pro I will tell you that. he totally enjoyed his job. was able to talk to hans a short time but in that short time talking to hans I knew he loved his job and lived to protect people he had a special air about himself and it so visable. That day getting pulled over by the Alaska State Trooper changed my life totally and gave the Alaska State Troopers a good name for themself's of how a respectful trooper should perform in the line of duty. he will be missed but never forgotten.

I heard about Hans Roelle's death while performing his duties as a state trooper. I do not know if we are related or only share a last name, but I have also lost several friends to the violence that prevails in our society today. My prayers are with Hans Roelle's family.

You are truly missed. I often look back at our relationship and the way we looked beyond the others weaknesses. Your were my friend. I proudly claimed you as my brother.
You were the family member with the ability to keep us all together. You could communicate with the "crazed" and the "intense." You actually practiced unconditional love; a concept foreign to most. Our circle is broken without you.
Fortunately, our children are better than us. They are either blind to the differences, or conflicts, or simply do not allow human indifference to alienate them from those with the capability to value their family.
Through our children we shall succeed, otherwise we are failures.
The love and direction you provided your children prior to departing this Earth insured your success on the most important level.
