Sir:
As I continue to keep my promise I made to honor each of you who made the supreme sacrifice that horrible day by writing a reflection to each of you, I also find myself thinking what it was that you said and did that resulted in the saving of so many innocent lives.
But whatever it is, your actions are every bit of what a hero does...to come to the rescue when it is needed most. Your actions have elevated you to the status of an American icon, and your legacy shall live on, forever.
Our fellow countrymen live their lives every day, in peace and their concerns are about business or family matters. They have no real concept of what a hero is, or what a police officer TRULY is made up of, or of the sacrifce an officer is willing to make for them. Maybe it is good that our countrymen live so carefree, but if that's the case, it is because of police officers such as yourself, that provide the security for them to live that way. Officers such as you, give all in order that our fellow countrymen can continue to live the dreams our forefathers had so many years ago.
No words written, no medals given, no memorials in your honor, can ever repay you and your family for the enormous debt our country owes you. But to remember is the only true honor we can bestow upon you, along with the love of a grateful nation.
As our war on terror continues, our enemies have felt the wrath of America overseas, and the diligence of our police in the homeland. As our military continues to raise the bar of what a professional fighting force is, so did you raise the bar of what a police officer is in America. You have made all of us still here who wear the badge, proud. May you rest in peace, and take joy in the fact that you saved so many others in exchange for your life. Thank you and God bless you, and God Bless America.

Captain Thompson, We met but one time, but that was all it took. After working one tour of duty with you, it became immediately apparent that you were a professional with a great spirit and a great heart. We will never forget you, not because of how you died, but because of how you lived. Rest in peace, we have the watch now.

There are but two persons who protect the sinful human race from destroying itself. One is God's Holy Spirit. The other is the Peace Officer. Without them, we would all perish at each other's hands.

You were called into this profession and our Lord and Savior has blessed you because:
According to Romans 13.1-5...
God ordains the Peace Officer’s profession.
The Peace Officer is sent by God.
The Peace Officer is vested with God's authority to enforce the law.
A Peace Officer's badge is to be honored by us, because God honors it.

You gave the ultimate sacrifice, your life for your fellow man, while serving, defending, and protecting others in your community.

Thank you for your service to America. Your efforts saved thousand that horrible day.
My thoughts and prayers go out to your family and friends. You will be in our hearts forever.

It is one long, sad year from the date of the terrorist attacks. I was one of the honored few Officers who responded to the towers that day alongside Capt. Harry Thompson and again honored to carry him out March 23, 2001.
What can I say about this brave Officer that has not been said before? We think about him every day, his professionalism, spirit, positive nature and wonderful laugh and sense of humor. If I close my eyes and concentrate I can hear that deep laugh and see that beautiful smile that affected us all.
We hold the recruits to the standard of Capt. William Harry Thompson, one that is difficult if not impossible to attain! I wish that all of you reading this could have met him and he could have touched your lives the way he touched ours.
We are trying to "enjoy the journey of life" in honor of Harry Thompson. If you did know him, you were privileged to meet a true hero even before Sept. 11, 2001. He will live in our hearts forever. We will never forget.....

Sergeant Pat Maiorino
New York State Court Officers Academy

I am but one of many, who met you only due to our common employ. Of all the court staff I have met in my time, NOONE stands out more in my memory of the ultimate example of what we all aspire to be. You wrote the book, and appeared on its cover. My opinion cant be wrong. It is the same opinion of all you have touched. It came as no surprise that you responded to that last call. Duty to others came before duty to self. We all stand a little taller because of your supreme sacrifice. You will always remain a legend.
May God bless you, your family, friends and our fellow officers. SCOPPRSC

On September 11,2001 Captain William "Harry"Thompson reported for his tour of duty at the NYS Court Officers Academy. No one could have known the horrific events that were about to unfold. When the attack occured Captain
Thompson along with other academy personnel responded to the Trade Center without hesitation. After speaking to many officers who were with Captain Thompson it is apparent that even when the south tower was about to collapse Captain
Thompson stayed and continued to keep people moving and help the injured.I truly believe that in his last moments alive Captain Thompson brought peace and comfort to the injured and dying. Captain Thompson was a 27 year veteran and a true American Hero. When I hear the phrase "role model"being used for athletes and actors/actresses I shake my head in disbelief. Captain Thompson is someone who young Americans
should model their lives after. He sacrificed his life so that others may live. God Bless you Harry. You will not be forgotten!

My Prayers are with all the friends and family of all the officers who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
I lost my brother tragically, Det. David Taylor, Greensboro PD, On August 7, 2001. I was in NY for my fiancee's Mother's funeral the first of Sept. I was stranded there for 3 weeks due to this atrocity. As I watched the events on TV, I cried for all those who lost their lives. But was especially emotional about the Police Officers and the Firefighters and their families, as I had just recently suffered a tragic loss myself. As I walked through the streets in the days following the attack, I cried with pride as I saw the officers on duty on all the corners in the city. I knew how hard it was for them, knowing they had lost their friends. On the Sat. following the attack I was at St. Patrick's for mass. The last 2 people to go up and take communion were 2 NYPD officers, again I cried. I hope all of you are getting the support that my family and I got when we needed it, from the Deparment. I know the comforting words and even the funny stories the officers tell us about my brother helps. I know that our loved ones who are gone from here, had a higher calling and are happy and at peace in Heaven. Hopefully we can all feel that same peace one day! God bless All of you! And God bless America!

The sacrifice made through your heroism is what holds that thin blue line together. Words are not there to express the gratitiude of your service and the sadness of your death that I felt as I watched this all unfold. I am asking God to give your family and friends comfort as they go on without you.

God I don't know what to say. I intend to post this message for each and everyone of you heroes so Officer, Detective, Agent, Whatever,... I thank you. You swore to serve and to protect. Well your days of protecting us are over. But you will forever be in service. Your eternal service... the inspiration you and your fellow bothers and sisters have re-enforced in my heart, will live so long as I do. Though I will not always carry your name in the front of my mind, not in my duties as a soldier or as the police officer I plan to become when I get home, I will still always carry with me the knowledge of your sacrifice... of your heroism, of your selflessness... I will carry a samll piece of you everywhere I go. Be it with an M-16 in my hands in a strange land, or a badge on my chest in my own back yard... long after the flags come down and the nation carries on... until the day I die... you will continue to serve... as my inspiration. God bless you. God bless your family. God bless your agency. God bless FDNY. God bless all the soldiers, sailors, airmen, coast guardsmen, and marines. God bless New York City. GOD BLESS AMERICA. Thank you my brothers and sisters. I love you.
