I never knew you Officer Fazio, but I remember seeing your name on a sign after the attack. The sign simply read "Have you seen Robert Fazio." All of these years later, I still remember your name. I have kept you in my thoughts for well over 10 years. I live in Virginia. I never knew you sir, but I will always remember that sign. I want you to know how brave you were that day. Thank you and rest in piece.

Thank you for saving my husband on that day. You pulled him from the concourse, got him out and put him into an ambulance before you ran back in to save more lives. I didn't even know him then, but your selflessness and extreme courage is to this day changing the course of lives. Please know that the man you saved is doing great things as a foster parent to children in need (and he rescues animals as well). He is a wonderful father to these children. Your legacy lives on in him, and in them, and in everything they and their children and their children's children will do.
They will know about you. You will never, ever be forgotten.

Every time I walk into the 13th or the Academy I think of you. You were the fixture of the Precinct, my cousin's faithful partner for years. You remained at her side for her entire time in the hospital in April 2001 when she died of cancer. It was no surprise to find out when I was assigned to the Detective Bureau at the 13th Precinct on the night of September 11 to find out that you gave your life saving others. You were a true cop. You did it right, day in and day out. I think about how you and Maureen are probably still doing it right driving around together protecting us all. I'll never forget and will continue to try to do it the way you did. Thanks Bobby

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

To the parents and sister of Officer Robert Fazio I offer my most sincere condolences for the loss of your son and brother. He was a hero...a fine and decent human being...be proud to have had him in your lives.
I too have lost a brother...so I know how hard it is to have your own sadness while watching your parents grieve for their son. It is not easy and I will keep you in my prayers.
I also know your parents heartache...I have lost a wonderful young son, eighteen months ago, in a violent and senseless way...he was my brother's namesake...none of us know why we are made to carry such a cross...there are no words of comfort in having to bury a child who is far too young and taken so suddenly. My heart goes out to you both with understanding and my deepest sympathy.
Keep your faith in God, and rely on his graces to carry you through until you all will be reunited again. I know your loved one is watching over all of you and so long as you carry his memory in your hearts he will never be far from you.
May God's perpetual light shine upon the soul of Officer Robert Fazio and may he rest in His eternal peace for having made the ultimate sacrifice in protecting and serving the people of New York.
God's blessings on each of you.

To the family and loved ones of Officer Robert Fazio and his fellow officers with the New York City Police Department and most especially to John:
Mere words seem insignificant to honor your heroism and courage which will never be forgotten. On this the fifth anniversary month of the tragic devastation wreaked upon our nation, those brave men and women who lost their lives safeguarding others are remembered and revered.
May your spirit continue to soar and your memory continue to inspire.
This reflection is sent with the utmost respect and gratitude for the distinquished service Robert gave to his community and country, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on September 11, 2001.
