Reflections for Police Officer Mark Joseph Ellis
Mark-
I remember you from junior high and high school like it was yesterday, always so kind and considerate. As soon as I heard the news after 9-11 that you had been amongst the heroes taken that day my heart ached. When I visited the Fallen Officers Memorial in DC a few years ago I stopped and said a prayer by your name. Thank you for your bravery.
God Bless

Mark, I can't believe it has been 7 years since 9/11/01. I remember one of our last conversations the Thursday before when you found out that the TD-4 Department Recognition Committee approved your submissions. You were estatic. Little did I know that in less than a week, you would perform one of the most heroic acts ever by a member of the NYPD. Not a day goes by that I do not think you and Ray. Until we meet again.

Almost 7 years have gone by Mark since 9/11. I feel like it was yesterday that we sat in the 110 Pct. locker room during FTO while in the academy back in 1997/98, talking about getting things done. Walking to foot posts on Roosevelt Avenue in our grey training uniforms. Riding the #7 train back and forth. Standing there at night feeling so vulnerable, but so bold at the same time. A sense of pride, at that time, that nobody could have ever taken away from us. 10 years have gone by pal. A lot has happened. The reality of the job and the outcomes were humbling to say the least. I dont know why it took me 7 years to leave this. But R.I.P. Brother.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I purchase a silver band in 2002. I asked for my donation to be in the name of an police officer. I received Mark Ellis NYPD. I have always wondered who he was and was he married? any kids? Today I decided to google his name.
I have wear this bracelet every year from August to the end of October and then off and on for the past 5 years. I pray for him and the family he has left behind pretty much everyday. I don't him but my family and I are very proud of him.
My husband is also an officer here in California. And I know he would have done the same thing. Thank you to him his family NYPD for doing what you do best.

It is hard to believe that is has been 6 years since that terrible day. The nation mourns, along with your family, that your's and so many other lives were taken in one day. You were so young... not much older than I am now, yet you showed the bravery and integrity of the most veteran officer. I thank you for your sacrifice and dedication. God bless you, Officer Ellis.
