RON OUT AT THE STATION, OUT AND ABOUT TO HAVE FUN WITH PARTNER BRYAN SMITH "WE ALL WORKED TOGETHER IN MIAMI" THINKING OF YOU. HANG TOUGH MY FRIEND

POLICE OFFICER ROB MASON
BROTHER

April 19, 2008

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Although I do not know you or you family, I lost my uncle 26 years ago when I was 8 years old. He too, was a member of the Federal Protective Services and was killed while on patrol. I respect all these men and women and hope his memory lives on through your lives. These men and women give their lives for our safety and so often it goes overlooked. You have both my respect and sadness. Thank you for all you gave, you could give nothing more of yourself and to this world. Sincerely,
Derek Yesucevitz

My thoughts are with your loved ones on this 6th anniversary of your EOW. Justice was not served in your case as I don't believe 30 years is punishment for what this individual has done to your family. All of the holidays, special days and events that you will not be here to see or attend, all the dreams that will never come about. No one can tell me that 30 years is enough of a punishment to give all of these back to your loved ones. You are a true hero. Thank you for your dedicated service to law enforcement and to your Country. Continue to keep watch over your loved ones.

I was a friend of Ron's while we were in the Marine Corps together. We met at Military Police School, in Lackland, TX in 1985, and later we served together as Military Police at Quantico, Va. Ron was a true, loyal friend and I miss him greatly. We had nick named him "Sheffy" and he was always upbeat and quick with a laugh and a smile. I have never forgotten him even though we lost contact in later years. When I think back at my time in the Marine Corps and share my memories with my children, Ron is always fondly remembered. It was an honor to be his friend.

To those willing to bleed, sweat, cry, fight and die for our freedom, our safety, and our way of life: THANK YOU. your sacrafice wont be in vain, and we will never forget the love of life, family, friends and country it took to face down the wolf. You are truly a hero Uncle Ron. We all miss you....

This is my shield,
I bear it before me in battle,
But it is not mine alone.
It protects my brother on my left.
It protects my city.
I will never let my brother out of its shadow,
Nor my city out of its shelter.
I will die
with my shield before me
Facing the enemy.

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell

Although I didn't start work as a dispatcher for FPS until three months after Ron's death I have heard many wonderful things about him.

Ron, from all I can gather you were truly a wonderful man and a HERO to many. From the stories that have been told you were a wonderful assest to the FPS team. You are greatly missed by the FPS family. You are definitely not forgotten.

Ron was my friend and despite daily violence directed at officers everywhere, Ron did not wear his vest on duty. It cost him his life. Please do not let a brother officer make the mistake Ron did.

Ronald Cory Sheffield...Up until now I haven't been able to leave this for you. Ron, you were the best friend and partner I ever had the good fortune of knowing. I love you like a brother and think about you every day. Some times the things that happen to us in life do not always appear to be clear and justified, I believe you were one of the chosen ones, called away for a greater cause...You are sorely missed. You were the bravest, most courageous person I knew. truely one of the Few and the Proud. God be with you always. God Bless your Daughters and Family.
