Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Hagop Jake Kuredjian

Jake, its almost been 9 years and everyday I go to work I still dress out next to your old locker and think about the short time I knew you and how lucky i was to know you. Wish you could have still been here but I know you are in a better place. We miss you

Jake,
I think of you all the time. I remember you laugh, your smile, your charm as if it where yesterday. I miss your presence and since of humor from riding on my bus. When you were taking from us, I was a bus driver for Santa Clarita Transit. You, and Deputy Wayne Waternan would brighten my day when you bored. Even though our ride was only a few hours thru Santa Clarita, we made the best of it and had fun. Me and Wayne still joke and talk to this day about you and New Orleans trips with all the crazy people...lol. I wanted to share this story so people would know just what kind of cool fella you really where. I know your in a awesome place now, and lol looking down on us all!

Jake,

You will always ride on with the IWMC. In many chapters, the center patch is officially referred to as "Jake" in your honor. RIP Brother. Skids

Jake,

It is comming up on seven years since you were taken from us. The world has seemed smaller ever since. Everyone misses that big smile and constant friendly demeanor. Every time I ride by your resting place, I stop by and chat with you. There are always cigars and toy sheriff cars placed upon your plaque. I will always be grateful for the years we worked together. Can you believe that was twenty-four years ago?! Rest easy, buddy. We will ride again soon.

I had the pleasure of working at the Malibu/Lost Hills stations with Jake back in the 90's. As I was a new Deputy Jake was always there to answer any question I had and I will always appreciate that and remember him with kind thoughts.

Rest in peace brother and may God bless the Kuredjian family.

Dear Jake,

I learned right away of your death, I noted it like I note all peace officer deaths, as I was once a cop too. Although I live in San Francisco, I saw a few bumper stickers celebrating your life and name.

But I noticed your life and accomplishments even more because we share an Armenian heritage and a family name - my grandfather was Ohannnes Kiredjian from Smyrna. I understand Kiredjian means son of the plasterer, I don't know what Kuredjian means, if different, but I know that our heritage had something to do with your calling.

We knew that the weak and the innocent needed protection. How often my Marashtze grandmother told me that nobody protected our people. How bitter she was that the strong nations looked the other way. How much they needed an army of defenders to protect the women and children, and to arm the men.

When you held up your right hand and took the oath, you showed the world you would give service and protection to every oppressed, scared and endangered person. When you did ten thousand brave things for others, you honored that call. There was no limit to your courage and generosity.

I am proud to be of the same traditions. Rest in noble peace.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

To the family and loved ones of Deputy Sheriff Hagop Jake Kurejian and his fellow officers with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department:

On this the fifth annniversary of Jake's tragic death, I wanted to honor and remember him today. Jake's professionalism and dedication will never be forgotten, nor will his valor and courage.

I hope that God is holding him in the sweetest part of his heart and the most gentle part of his soul. No doubt that Heaven has another hero in Jake, but I am so sorry you had to lose your beloved. May you all continue to be comforted by your faith and your law enforcement family and other police survivors.

I am so sorry that Jake was robbed of his life so young and so tragically, but through his heroism and the profound sense of duty with which he lived his life, he made an immeasurable difference. May his spirit continue to soar and may his memory continue to inspire.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Jake gave to his community and the citizens of California, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on August 31, 2001.

Jake and I were good friends. When I lived in Malibu we were always together. There is not a day that goes by while I am at work that something reminds me of Jake. I was a Reserve Deputy in LA County working on Search and Rescue. This is when I first met Jake, (1986). Where ever you went with Jake you were bound to meet every person there because it would turn out that they all knew Jake. I miss Jake and send out my condolence to his family whom unfortunatly I have not been in contact with for a long time.

To anyone that has lost someone they love to our job GOD BLESS YOU!.. Stu.

There is not a moment in which i dont think about the things you did for me, helping me out before halloween trying to make me look like a "realistic" cop. I was only your 9 year old across the street neighbor when you took me under your arm and taught me some very valued things. I remeber the day we called you my "uncle" and you said what are you talking about i am your uncle! Im sorry the things that happend did, my parents split up and i moved away. we never talked again for 3 years, two weeks before august 31 i saw you at my school and you told me you were proud of me.. I just wanted to tell you, everything you did for me those 6 years really made an impact on me, i will never forget it. Thanks uncle jake!
I love you
