Reflections for Police Officer Terry McDowell
As I sit here and plan the 9th Annual Memorial Poker Run route, I have many memories come to mind. August 24th will be 10 years since your passing and I want to make sure this ride honors you and your family. I also want to make it the biggest and baddest yet! I will ask that you help guide me and direct the poker run where you would like to ride.
I really can't believe it will soon be 10 years. It really doesn't seem possible. I remember so many times working side by side with you. Sure miss that.

Dear Terry, I didn't get the chance to know you but I know your wife, son and beautiful daughter. I watch over them all the time and also do my best to keep the wife on the straight and narrow. I do believe that you can see this and that God allows these things to be seen. So I guess I just wanted to let you know that I'm now on the board for GBTB and this is the org. was created because of you. I am going to do my best to help Angie and all the others make this something you would be proud. Thanks for what you did and I wish I had the chance to know you.

All my life i have been around police officers. My grandpa was a sheriff deputy my mom is a police dispatcher and now my brother is a police officer. I say this because i have had the great fortune of growning up around police officers in my family and who are very close family friends. I have lived in whitehall my whole sixteen years of life and i know a few whitehall officers. Although i never got a chance to met officer McDowell i just thought i would pay my respect to a fallen hero. Officer McDowell you will never be forgotten and your memory will never die in city of whitehall. Because you were a true hero and someone that made the ultimate sacrifice.
God bless you your family and your brothers at the Whitehall Police Department!

I have lived in whitehall all my life and i must say that august night was the citys most unforgettable night. It was a sinseless act that took a life. But through it all police officer Terry McDowell took his place as a hero. May god bless terry his family and his partner who also lost a great deal that night.

I did not have the privilege of knowing you but I have met other family members.
Tomorrow, I will proudly ride in memory of you. I will have as a passenger on my motorcycle an angel. Our daughter Leslie was killed in a motorcycle accident a year ago when an inattentive driver failed to yield while turning left in front of the motorcycle she as a passenger on. A survivor of the accident, Tony Baldridge, will also be riding his motorcycle in your memory tomorrow.
Let us not forget all those men and women who serve us all who have given it all in that service, both law enforcement and military.

We had the great honor of attending a memorial for you today. You would be so proud. We think of you and miss you every day, but it is so humbling to see that the community continues to remember you, 8 years later. The site is beautiful, you have such a great flag flying high on a flag pole. The flowers are planted and cared for by members of the community that you served. I was able to attend with Eric and our 2 girls, thanks to you. Your son gave such an honorable tribute to you. It was great to hear him speak of you and the memories that he has of you. You are alive and living in your children. Thanks, Terry. We will always remember you, love you and miss you.

Terry, It has been almost 8 years since you were taken from us and not a day goes by that you don't cross my mind. I still remeber going deer hunting with you and you walking farther and farther ahead up those hills. I was thinking "what is this guy? Superman? " ha ha. There are so many memories of our time on the Honor Guard together that I could never forget. You are missed and loved beyond words.

Terry,
I rode in the poker run a couple of weeks ago. Eric was asked to speak when we arrived at the cemetary. He spoke of the sacrafice you made that day in August. For what you did that day, Eric was able to become a husband to a great woman, and the father of two beautiful girls. My family will never forget the sacrafice you made that day.

I knew Officer McDowell when I did my college internship with the PD back in 1997. Terry made the biggest impression on me of all the other officers. Even though I was a college kid and an outsider to the department, Terry was always very kind and took the time to teach me about police work.
Everytime I complained that my vest was too hot and my gear was heavy, I always thought of Terry and I pressed on. Terry was a very devoted officer a true credit to the badge and agency. The world is a poorer place without men like Terry. God bless his family and fellow officers. Rest in peace Officer McDowell.

I can not believe that it has been 7 years since all of our lives changed forever. I can still remember the 1st time I met you. Eric was so looking forward to me meeting you, as he looked up to you as a mentor and friend. You told me just before we left that day that you would be at our wedding, if I didn't see you before. Well, Terry, thanks to you we had a wedding. You WERE there, looking down with a smile, I am sure. Eric is a great husband and father. He talks of you so often and how much you loved your family and the community you served. You taught him so much in such a short time that you worked together. Your legacy lives on in our family and in so many others. You are a constant in our home. Our daughters will always know what you did that day and the sacrifce you made. We love you and you will never be forgotten! My heart is eternally grateful for the sacrifice you made for me 7 years ago. No one will ever know how I feel.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.
